Unpublished Tarot Database

Created by Stacy Flinn

There are so many wonderful tarot designs that never found their way to publication. Images of some of these card designs are often posted on blogs, websites, file sharing sites, DeviantArt and other such vehicles for imagery. There are many hundreds, possibly well over a thousand, of such tarot designs available, at least in part, through Internet sites. Stacy Flinn, who is based in Scotland has generously agreed to create records for these unpublished tarots. To date it amounts to 168 item, and it will take some years before it is substantially completed. In some cases it is difficult to locate information about these. This is very much a work in progress so there will be many errors and omissions. It would be excellent if other tarot enthusiasts who have information about unpublished designs or can correct information on existing listings could email [email protected]

Artist : F. J. Campos
Date :
Country :
No of cards :
Description : The Anaglyph Wicthes Tarot is a version of the 'Witches Tarot' originally created by Fergus Hall and now reworked by F. J. Campos, using the decks images, but converted into 3D, so it can be viewed with 3D glasses. This is a neat idea, and other tarot publishing companies and artists have begun to experiment with this idea as well.

Abstract Tarot
Artist :
Date :
Country :
No of cards : 78
Description : The Abstract Tarot has designs that suggest a dream-like state, with swirling and smokey images, allowing the viewer to discern what the art 'feels like' to them personally, because the vague images and broad spectrum they may suggest, depend on the viewer. These designs also have the card titles within a spikey shaped lime green border, with the titles of the trumps and the pips on them in white type that stands out against this, so the borders and texts create a striking contrast against the images within the artworks.

Description : The Aeclectic Community Tarot was a collaborative project done by the well known tarot forum 'Aeclectic Tarot'- different members of the forum signed up to potray a trump, pip, or royal card as they would like, each artwork was done by a different member. They were then, all brought together as a whole set of 78 tarot images. This is a great idea for tarot enthusiasts, a chance to see how other potray an images artisticly and also symbolically. I think it would be a great group learning project with tarot imagry and also a lot of fun to see what fellow tarot fans designed.

Description : 'Aedicula Arcanrum' translates as 'Temple of Secrets'
These designs have a dreamy/surreal quality, but not overtly so. Though not a Ride Waite clone, the trumps images do stick closely with the iconography of the RWS imagery. The images also incorporate a impressionistic textured background using watercolours.

Albareda Tarot
Artist : FJ Campos and Josep Lluis
Date : 2004
Country :
No of cards :
Description : The Albareda Tarot is a collection of tarot images, featuring the qabbalah and the tarot with many correspondances, relating to the tarot image in the center, qabbalisticaly. The tarot series displays things such as the hebrew letter, the paths, numbers connecting the sephiroth, tripicities, gematria value and so on. Artist F J Campos and Tarot scholar Joseph Luis made this set of icons intended as a visual study aid and also to show how the tarot is in harmony with the qabbalah. Many people who study Hermetic and Esoteric teachings tend to use the qabbalah as a basis for their work. This collection of images reinforces the abstract qabbalistic correspondances.

Aquatic Tarot
Artist : Andreas Schröter
Date : 1995, 2010
Country : Germany
No of cards : 78
Description : The Aquatic Tarot is a watercolour rendering by Andreas Schröter of the original Rider Waite deck created by Pamela Colman Smith. Schröter's very skilled watercolour, contrasts with the opaque flat colour that Smith used back in 1910. The change in the medium gives a different perspective on the well known Rider Waite style of tarots, while keeping close to the original imagery.

Aussie Animal Oracle
Artist : 'Black Rose'
Date :
Country : Australia
No of cards :
Description : The aritist 'Blackrose' did the Aussie Animal Oracle as an exercise to discover animal guide or totem animals, which is a common Pagan tradition or practice, many different pagan or native traditions do have animal spirit guides, or an animal figure that relates to them. The artist used photography of the Australian wildlife to illustrate this deck. I could see this set of images not only appealing to those that use animal spirit guides as part of there spiritual practices, but also enjoyable for some who love nature and wildlife.

It could be considered an esoteric or magickal depiction of the tarot as well, because of the highly occult symbolism in the designs.

Claudine Hellmuth Tarot
Artist : Claudine Hellmuth
Date : 2000
Country : USA
No of cards :
Description : Claudine Hellmuth is a graduate form Columbus Ohio School of Art and Design, after she graduated from art school, she decided to experiment with collage as an art form. This is also the style in which she chose to portray tarot imagery. Her art style caught on with other enthusiasts in the USA. Many people hold her in high regard, because scrapbooking and collage art is now very popular in the USA among hobbyists, though it wasn't when Claudine began to experiment with it several years ago. She did pioneer, with her collaging, in some ways a mini art movement with American hobbyists.

Colman Smith Tarot
Artist : Samvado Gunnar Kossatz
Date :
Country :
No of cards :
Description : The Colman Smith tarot is Pamala Colman Smith's original tarot designs, but coloured much brighter than the original by artist Samvado Gunnar Kossatz. This set of icons is a very a striking Rider Waite clone, and the thing that makes this take on the RWS different is the bright neon-like, almost psychodelic colouring, of the Colman Smith images. Half of the deck, the drawings, is purist or classic tarot art, while the other half portrays tarot art very uniquely with the bright hues, so you have the best of both worlds.

Date : 2007
Country :

Description : The HP Lovecraft tarot is based on of the late Victorian-Edwardian horror and fantasy author HP Lovecraft, other artists have been inspired to use Lovecraft ideas (from his fiction) and imagery for the tarot many times and other esoteric works, generally. Lovecraft's stories depict surreal and dark imagery, and also there is a lot of crossover, or a very fine line at best that goes between his fiction and the Victorian Occult revival, as well as Goetic and/or Luciferian imagery (also quite similar to Lovecraft imagery.) The images are in black and white.

Description : The instant ideas tarot is in the form of a typical tarot deck, but in a more 'lose' way. It does have the usual 78 images, though it shows pictures and states correlating ideas beneath them, as opposed to the traditional trump names. The series instead uses key words, to define the trumps. These illustrations were designed to be a brainstorming tool, or visual device from which to springboard ideas, in order to come up with an idea or alternate approach to something.

Kage-Yu Tarot
Artist :
Date :
Country :
No of cards : 22
Description : The Kage-Yu tarot depicts wonderful tarot art work, the images are moderately surreal and dreamlike. Some of the imagery within the trumps is reminiscent of Crowley's Thoth deck with Lady Freida Harris' artwork, athough not enough so to be called a 'Thoth deck'. These images are beautiful collection of tarot art, also having a bit of an impressionistic feel within the illustrations.

Le Nomard Oracle
Artist :
Date : 2004
Country :
No of cards :
Description : The Le Monard Oracle is just that, a Lenormand Oracle. It is based off of the French Mystic Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand (1772-1843), card and fortune telling. There are many styles of Lenormand decks, and art to accompany them in this age, just as there are with tarots but this one remains very 'purist' and close to the original design, of The Lenormand Oracle. The icons meanings are also printed in English on this particular version as opposed to French, which would make this easily accessable to more people whom may want to learn more about Lenormand symbolism. The images also have an accompanying playing card in the corner, again making learning the symbolism more approachable to someone who may not know much about the Lenormand system.

Though at first it may seem a silly idea, that may not work, he does an excellent job of portraying the tarot iconography using these children building blocks. This creates a humorous and creative surprise when one first sees these images. It is also an idea that no other tarot artist would have thought of.

Marco Bendetti Tarot
Artist : Marco Bendetti
Date : 1994
Country : Italy
No of cards : 78
Description : The tarot art works by Italian Artist Marco Bendetti are presented in a minimalistic but classic style. The negative space in which the images are placed has applied gold leaf in the backround, displaying simplistic figures for the trump icons. This deck is a fine example where 'less is more', and the art is also styled on a traditional Marseilles, which can be seen further within the pips just bearing the emblems of the suit, and the trumps are also placed in the Marseilles order as well. All in all a lovely example of a Continental or European tarot.

Description : The New Millenium Tarot by Lee Varis is a collection of the tarot trump images all done with computer art and illustration techniques. The icons also feature the Kabbalistic and planetary attribute in the corner of the illustrations. The illustrations themselves are created in a traditional way with the figures dressed in medieval dress as in many traditional tarot, but they also have a bit of a modern feel with bright graphics, and a touch of surrealism too. This set of art works is a nice combination of recognizable tarot symbolism mixed with modern aspects and of course, the artist's own style.

Date : 2008
Country : France
No of cards :
Description : The Oduber Tarot was created by French artists Hennie Boshoff and Jane Parfet in association with the Azazel institute, in honour of the Goddess Lilith, the first wife of Adam. The Azazel Institute focuses on art and philosophy of Mediterranian spiritual and art traditions. The artwork of the Oduber tarot is based on the allegorical myth of Lilith's offspring. It is done in a post-impressionistic style, appropriately in darker tones, which works well in portraying a unconventional view of the Biblical stories and allegories.

Description : Italian artist Pavel Peterson took a modern and also minimalistic approach to the tarot, he uses the qabbalistic lettering within the Trump pictures as well. The images do have the iconography of the traditional tarot, though there is a lot of detail cut out, leaving just the bare essential symbols. The deck also places the fool at the end of the cycle, with the qabbalah, the fool is Shin instead of Alpeh, though many Eurpean tarots, do this. The images are set in black and white, another thing that makes the deck minimalist.

She lives and works in Italy as a professional artist, that works, for the most part with ceramics and in contemporary art. This is a very creative and unique approach for a use of a medium, to displaying a series of tarot images. Description : This is a set of the 22 tarot trumps set in an ancient Egyptian style. Many tarots utilize the Egyptain imagery because there arose a view that the first tarots were of ancient Egyptian origin, and also because many Western Mystery traditions utilise Egyptian deities within their teachings. This deck places the Fool Trump as the 22nd as opposed to the first image. These images are drawn in black and white, and are obviously derived from the Falconnier deck.

Description : These images of the Trumps are numbered differently than most cards, it starts at 11, instead of 0 for the The Fool. This is in reference to the Kabbalistic paths, though this is usually implied in Tarot iconography, usually the Trumps are not numbered in this fashion. These artworks were made by the artist as a pathworking meditation with the tree of life, and this is also why the artist chose to use a unique approach to the art as well as the numbering. The art also has a surreal and dreamlike feel to it.

Futhark Runes
Artist : F.J.Campos
Date : 2003
Country :
No of cards :
Description : The Futhark Rune Oracle is a set of runes, but pictures of the rune symbols on cardstock. Rune divination is still popular among many modern Pagan and Wiccan traditions, and practioners. Though it is a very old form of divination, as most forms of divination are, it is still comonly practiced too, like other forms. Many people familiar with tarot are often fascinated by other means of divination, be it for the history and culture behind it, to learn esoteric ideals, or to use and practice divination for meditations or readings. This would have mostly likely went over very well with tarot enthusiasts who go on Orphalese, being classic runes, and the probability is high that most of the website's fans also use and are familiar with other forms of divination aside from the Tarot, Runes being one of them.

This set of art works focuses on dualities which many spiritual practices often do, that also use the tarot within their studies and practices (ie Hermetic and Alchemical as well as some modern Pagan practices) which are based on the idea of duality.
This was the artist purpose, to show the 'well' and 'ill' dignified ideas of different situations within day to day life, and in the natural thinking processes, as many other techniques in common occult practices also do through symbols, colors, ideas, and icons.

Description : This set of 78 tarot art works is based on the art of famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali. This idea has been used before when creating a set of tarot icons or tarot deck, most likely because it works so well with the ideas behind a tarot deck. Many people use the tarot cards in conjunction with dream analysis, and imagine that surreal art echoes this.
