General Commentary

According to popular notion, the twelve animals symbolize a particular set of characteristics that govern the year(s) each rules. For example: if you are born in 1950, the Year of Tiger, you will have characteristics that are peculiar to the Tiger.

The twelve animals are thought to relate to one another in specific ways, thus leading to harmony or disharmony, good luck and bad luck. For example: if you are a Tiger you are supposed to avoid the Monkey and embrace the Dog.

These popular superstitions bury the deeper meaning of the twelve animal zodiac, which, at its foundation, is best consulted with reference to five element theory and stem/branch combinations.
