Dr. Gene Scott Dead at 75
Pasadena Star-News - News First the good doctor Hunter S. Thompson and now the crazed out whacked in the head enigmatic mega broadcaster doctor Gene Scott is gone.
For those of you who were never bored enough to actually sit through any of Dr. Scott's television, and that is probably most of you, he was a sight to see. Dr. Scott was a megalomaniac who would smoke cigars, talk about UFOs and the Lost Tribe, berate his audience for not sending enough money in, and come up with complex graphical biblical teaching on a big white dry erase board. When he got tired of talking he'd run video loops of his horses running around or other similar nonesense.
Dr. Scott was the pastor of the Los Angeles University Cathedral but he was so much more than this. In the past few decades most televangelists have been easily identifiable as cheap hucksters and hypocrites with very simple business models that prey on the weak -- folks like Jim Bakker, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and Jimmy Swaggart. Dr. Scott preyed on the weak as well but he was never as easy to figure out and remained a constant enigma to those who might run across him while channel surfing UHF back before cable or satellite tv. He was a Stanford educated preacher who definitely had more than a few screws loose.
Dr. Scott was very direct in his request for money. He oftentimes would punish his viewers by refusing to talk until a certain amount of money was sent in. It was comedic. He would say the most outrageous things in his bully like demands for people to give up their money. You were definitely going to hell if you didn't give and your place in heaven was largely a determination of how much you gave.
Rotten.com has a pretty good bio on the doctor that includes some classic quotes:
"A skinflint may get to Heaven, but what awaits him are a rusty old halo, a skinny old cloud, and a robe so worn it scratches. First-class salvation costs money."
"I want 300 people to give $1,000 by June 30 to humiliate Satan's efforts to destroy us," Dr. Scott commanded in a Web site missive. "I also want 700 to commit to $10,000 by Christmas. I've been trying to lighten the staff load for five years! I won't take responsibility for things I have no assurance I'll ever see!"
Dr. Scott railed against the FCC, told jokes, played the saxophone and showed off video footage of him sitting poolside with bikini clad women along with his horses. His program was broadcast in eight languages and in 180 countries. He broadcast 24 hours a day throughout the world and more recently had set up a live internet stream. I'm not quite sure why he was never able to crack cable or satellite tv more significantly but he was the master of the crazy obscure OTA programming.
Dr. Scott was a character. Though the world may indeed be a better place without him one can't help but chuckle at his antics and weird behavior that was the sideshow along the way as he ripped off his flock.

Dr. Scott fought prostate cancer since 2000 that had metastasized throughout his body, he finally died February 21, 2005 after much pain. He is survived by his wife Melissa Pastore-Scott aka Barbi Bridges, whom he married in 2000. Gene Scott was the quintessential abusive father living out his free-for-all verbal assaults and directives to all the willing, daddy-seeking unfortunates who took him seriously.
He was a prick and proud of it, but never achieved the "real" fame he selfrighteously demanded that he unconditionally deserved, nor the academic parity he so often paraded with his "...I have a PhD. from Stanford" claim that he reinforced at every possible opportunity in a futile attempt to elevate his credibility when the rhetoric got just a bit dry.
"Forever acknowledge and worship my every idiosyncrasy," is what he demanded of his non-academically oriented followers as long as they kept writing those checks. But in the end, he proved himself to be just a bad, public-access level celebrity perpetually pissed that the elite didn't see in him the genius that only HE saw in himself.
To the rest of us, he was immensely entertaining because he was great TV. All in all though, he was just a hick huckster from Oroville trying unsuccessfully to play in Hollywood's hipper sandbox, but never wanted to play with the other kids because his true social ineptness would too easily expose his inner greed-driven weakness.

The remarks left by some of the posters here are not appreciated by those of us who knew him well, as members of his congregation. Gene Scott was the ablest teacher of the Word of God in this century and a great treasure was taken out of the world when God took him home-- in no pain, he had a series of strokes and passed within a week, while the other intermittent besetting health problems he had were all in remission. Dr. Gene Scott had a real diploma from Stanford U., a doctorate in philosophies of education, and I have read his doctoral dissertation on Reinhold Niebuhr on the nature of sin. Only ignoramuses spout off nonsense about his doctorate like I've seen posted here. It's for real. Another thing -- Gene never took a penny from anyone he didn't teach and made sure of that by instructing all that he taught NOT to give unless HE taught them. Any verbal browbeating was designed to DRIVE AWAY the weakminded, not bully them into giving. There isn't an organization in the entire world whose members could ever be threatened into giving by the threat to withhold teaching God's Word which is just as likely to discomfit as it is to enthrall. Only people who truly love God and His word would feel that pressure -- the rest of the world would never be affected by it, and no one who is mentally weak can be a faither and a giver solely in response to teaching about God, with the only reward being eternal and granted by the Father in heaven.
Well what can I say, the person from his congregation said it all. I think , having followed him for years that he had a gift. The unfortunate thing here is that some of his behavior was not a good witness of what he was preaching. The bible states that a teacher is held to a harder standard". He did not like that..he made some comments that were wrong as we all do. However, having said that, I think its a reproach to the Lord to have his wife who was a PORN star that to my knowledge has not repented or explained to her church and was still running one of her businesses till 2003, and they have been married since 2000.
You know that there was much talk about his lifestyle,his prode and his arrogance...let me ask you is that fruit of the spirit? I mean God can use any of us..and will use the things that we cannot understand to confound the wise...but God is not Mocked..nor his word. I found Gene Scott a helluvalot more interesting when first coming upon his show back in 1982. The arrival of his Barbie Doll and her Las Vegas Review [couple of girlfriends] sometime around the early to mid 1990's left me non-plussed, to say the least. I couldn't quite figure out what all the bicycle riding was about, but with the gradual weeding out of the chorus line, and the narrowing down to the one, Ms. Melissa, complete with the filming of his proposal to her, albeit from a safe distance and surrounded by a shady glen, I gradually came to understand. I can't say that I was a believer, but I sure was an observer, over time. His show helped fill the time gap during which the 11:00 Nightly News could be avoided in favor of a little jazzed-up, dressed-down, old-time religion with a twist of modern logic. I originally thought his church was an outreach program for the inhabitants of Skid Row in downtown L.A., but eventually changed my mind while catching the equestrian segments that began showing up during his pledge drives. Plus, the fact that he played great musical sound tracks for the background on his videos, which were actually set in beautiful scenes of ranchlands and California's countryside, which over time, I began to recognize was most likely his spread of property, on which those earlier bicycle soirees had been filmed. But, what I think I most vividly remember were his verbal castigations of his staff and some of their on-sight terminations of employment. This lead me to the supposition that after acquiring a taste for Havana Creams, equestrian trails and properties, and maybe a few Las Vegas showgirls, you'd probably have a tendency to want to protect those high-end accoutrements, and vested interests. No more need for the small-time, low-budget, slow-witted-reflexed hangers-on from the lean years. No sirree.
Only techno-professionals need apply in the 21st Century. Yet, I was truly sorry to hear that prostate CA had been diagnosed. Because, despite all the major acquisitions he had made for his church, his beloved library with every bible, and religious artifact he was able to purchase in the name of educating his congregation in the life of Christ and all languages of the gospels, the old United Artists building housing his University Ministry, those lives in his congregation he was able to turn around for the better, his beautiful spread of California ranchland...he was still unable to save his own life and therefore ended up succumbing to his own mortality. For that, he will be sorely missed. I feel very sorry for the people who've depended upon him for their own salvation. Here was a person who finally seemed to be coming into his own. He was watching his dreams finally come to fruition.
As far as Melissa is concerned, she should get a voice coach, as well as a drama coach, the first so that she may be able to sustain singing on-key because she definitely has a tendency to go flat at least once in each line. Try cupping your hand over your good ear while singing, Melissa, so you can hear yourself when your voice goes off-key. And, secondly to be able to project a more convincing personna on-stage. And for God's sake, an image specialist, who'll style her image with a little more attention toward depth of character and credibility. You're in the big leagues now, and if you're going to play ball, you better know how to play it hard. Also, a course in economics, both Micro and Macro, might help you understand the mechanizations involved in the successful operation of the empire that's just been left to you.

Dr. Gene Scott died in Glendale Adventist Hospital from complications
of end stage prostate adenocarcinoma.
First diagnosed in October 2000 when
it was small and confined to the prostate, it was known to be histologically the most aggressive
form. Gene Scott declined removal
of his prostate at that time although
it carried a high liklihood of ten
year survival with prostatectomy.
Based on lowered post biopsy PSA levels, masked by a hormone laced
herbal preparation, Gene Scott claimed
to have been healed by faith. He
stopped having check ups.
Four years later, after five months
of persistent nausea, Gene Scott's
check up found Grade IV metastatic prostate cancer. His kidneys were blocked with cancer that had also
spread to his bladder, ureter and
bone. Too weak for full therapy,
and no longer a surgical candidate,
Gene Scott succumbed to advancing
cancer unresponsive to end state
efforts to slow the progression.
He developed blood clots, cardiac
failure and infections in his
lungs and urinary systems.
Strokes were the final events putting
him into a terminal coma. Multiple
organ failure less to life support
and finally expiration.
His widow, Melissa Scott, the former
Melissa Pastore, succeeded him as the
only pastor of the Los Angeles University Cathedral and church which
is run as a corporation without members.
Melissa Scott maintains that Gene Scott was healed of the first cancer and that
his breath was taken away and he was healed "over there."
Dr. Gene Scott and his surviving wife, Pastor Melissa Scott have preyed on the weak and gullible, holding their eternal life hostage for money, free servitude, and blind obedience.
A cornerstone to the Scott brand of brainwashing is isolation, by occupying follower's minds with guilt driven
24 hour a day watching of their teachings, tithes and offerings of 30% of income, and tithing time of 17 hours a week volunteering for their ministry enterprises.
Their messages are heavily laden with servitude of their pastor, touted as the only one looking after the souls of the faithful. Dr and Mrs Scott promote idolizing and serving them, holding themselves out as spiritually superior while humiliating their faithful. Double standards, deceit, and hypocrisy abound as they pay lip service to the Word. It's a well oiled dictatorship
that bans discussions and questions.

I do not know what God will do to Gene Scott in heaven. I know that none of us are perfect, and the ones that think they are were the ones killing people with perfection. Gene was always to lib for thaT. God is a God of a second chance. I was ready to give up but one night late I cought Gene scott on my 10 foot dish in 1982, I changed my mind about giving up that week. I would go to church and get beat to death and pounded by the preacher, then I would listen to Gene and recover and remeber what Jesus did on the cross for me. I did not have to live some pole vault religion were they keep raising the bar on me. God is a God of mercy and maybe he will forgive Gene Scott, I know what ever God does to Gene for giving poor sinners hope it will be just. I never sent he much money I only sent him money twice and it was not much money at all. I remeber one knight late he said I don't know about you people you got to be crazy sending me money, there must be somthing wrong with you if you are sending me money as crazy as I am. Then on the other hand he challanged you if you were tought in the word then what is it worth . For some it may have saved there lives and they may have sent in a lot of money who knows God knows. Love and life is the key. I did not need to be told I was a sinner I knew that. Gene Scott opened the word at times and showed me how to have faith in God the one he has been talking to since Febuary and the one you will be with soon for eternity and that's a long time. I think we are all crazy but some of us have a gift that helps some of us cope with life, and try to learn to love one another. Gene scott loved the sinner and he was one himself trying to find his way, the money was not the issue, now God may deal with that. The issue is did he help people live and did he love his Lord and the Lords people and I think he showed me he did. God will kill Mallissa to and call her up there to talk with her as God will with all of us. Judge nothing before it's time it wil be judged very soon for all of us in coparision to eternity and that's where we are all heading.Some of us will be cast into hell while others of us will go into heaven. It not so much what we did on earth is did we seek God with all of our minds soul and body, did we accept Jesus as our lord and savior, and did we love every one sinner and saint. I think Gene may have done that but I don't know God may cast him to hell cause God has the finale word on that.

I only just found Dr Scott a few weeks ago, and just found out he was dead. It made me sad. I have been uplifted and taught by him, even tho he is gone.
He has filled in many blanks for me. I don't care what the religious society thinks or thought about him. He was REAL. Most of them are fake and he exposed that.
As for Melissa, well, she's not a great singer, but I don't think she was there to put on a "show" like all those on the religious church shows. She is just as forgiven as you, by the same standard God uses for all. One of Jesus' most beloved followers was a former hooker.

In my view, the Scott Ministry is more closely a relative to Reality T.V. in America than any other programming currently playing in the educational category. The Scott Ministry cultivates a reality that fits rightly with beliefs of Modern Day Society and is intellectual completely competent with the currently developing technological systems. In short, Dr. Scott listeners are gifted, provided that they have an ear to listen and an open heart, with the possibilities exceeding the expectations of both what t.v has to offer and what any preacher has ever done or taught the word of the Bible to its students. Dr. Scott has also maintained integrity as well as upgraded his Philosophical System, especially in the last 5 years with singer Melissa Scott as the leading lady. Unlike, other ministries on TBN which cum on as a freak show and extreme hair & make-up and fake hair, causing eye damage, Melissa is tasteful in her appearance. Although you may say that is a subjective opinion, you nevertheless have your choice of believing what is true and correct at all times. Regardless of the reservations you might have in observance of my righteous thought patterns, know this, the tone of some of the commentators on this page, is not appreciated because it does not sound like it is coming out from a non-judgemental place of the mind. I have always been intrigued by Gene Scott and sometimes ended up watching the whole sermon when I happened upon it. I appreciated the language lessons and attention to detail. I appreciate the same in Melissa Scott. It's hard to believe she picked up that much in just 5 years of marriage? I think she is forgiven for her past.
I haven't had such a good laugh as I did today reading the comments about the "Doc" and the "Whore of Babylon". I have just found out about her background and could not be less surprised. I happened to catch the show where he said that he was tested for cancer, prayed, and then was retested to show that God had cured his prostate. "Boy, are you in for a surprise in a few years" I thought to myself. It's only fitting that the one thing that he centered his life around for the past few years did him in.

I just found out today, 11-03-05 that Gene Scott bit the dust on 2-21-05. What saddens me is the eight months I could have been rejoicing over this event.
I am writing a book about God's charlatan. I worked as a musician inside the organization, and my experience nearly cost me my life. In a round-about way, I found God, but it was not through Scott's teachings! My story is briefly described by Glenn Bunning in his L.A. Times article, "The Shock Jock of Televangism." I've realized how superficial organized Christianity really is...how far-removed from Universal Truth, as it plods its way into each follower's bank account. How ironic that Scott should croak in the same hospital where I was treated for injuries received in a beating by Joe Henry Shackelford (his chief engineer) and Larry James Dudley (his TV time buyer and local hitman) in 1985.
Furthermore, I will chronicle, in great detail, the history of Faith Center, Wescott Christian Center, the TV and radio network, the ranches/farms, real estate scams, and all the violence and corruption occured off-camera. I am quite certain that the reader will view Scott's "teachings" as a smokescreen for his perverted ways.
Those who have died and miraculously come back describe traveling through a tunnel before seeing a bright light. I am convinced Scott's "tunnel" was a sewer! In light of this mountebank's passing, I mourn only the fact that he won't be able to file his "frivolous lawsuit" against me for libel, defamation, and slander.
I pity those who think they know all there is to know about this religious pimp, who thought nothing of ruining the lives of those who disagreed with him or witnessed the corruption firsthand. I regret the fact that the "teacher" is not around to grade my paper!

I studied religion,East & West,even taught Sunday school as a younger man. Get what you can from the bible and make up your own mind. Gene Scott, the American television evangelist who has died aged 75, offered his followers all the advantages of Christianity with none of the inconveniences, and thus became immensely rich.
Scott's followers were assured that they did not have to go to church on Sunday and that such foibles as homosexuality, adultery, abortion, profanity and drinking were just fine. "I don't ask you to change," he told his congregation. "I take you as you are." He had little time for the conventional pieties. "You ever meet Christians?" he asked. "You wish you could shove a pipe in their mouth. Anything to shut them up."
To qualify as a member of his church, the main requirement was a valid credit card, Scott's aim apparently being to make it richer than the Vatican. "A skinflint may get to heaven," he admitted, "but what awaits him are a rusty old halo, a skinny old cloud, and a robe so worn it scratches. First-class salvation costs money."
Anyone requiring salvation had to hand over 10 per cent of their income. This was a bare minimum. "I want 300 people to give $1,000 by June 30 to humiliate Satan's efforts to destroy us," read a recent message on his website. "I also want 700 to commit to $10,000 by Christmas." He once excomminucated the entire congregation for not giving enough. Those who did not respond to his barked instruction "Get on the telephone!" were told to "vomit on yourself with your head up in the air."
His fund-raising efforts were spectacularly successful. Individual donations from his 15,000-strong congregation at the Los Angeles University Cathedral (housed in a Spanish baroque-style former cinema), and from the estimated 50,000 contributors reached through his global broadcasting empire, were said to average $350 a month. In 1980 Werner Herzog made Scott the subject of a documentary, God's Angry Man, which showed the preacher raising several hundred thousand dollars during a television show lasting half an hour.
Scott's appeal lay in his genius as an entertainer. Buccaneering, shaggy-haired and bearded under a bandana or flamboyant hat, he was by turns unpredictable, outrageous, funny and inspired, but always compelling. Fat cigar in hand, his face contorted with rage, he would mix scripture with profanity-laden monologues about the state of the world ("Nuke 'em in the name of Jesus!" he cried during the Gulf War), punctuated with demands for more money.
No gimmick was neglected. At church services a rock band would belt out such hymns of praise as "Kill a Pissant for Jesus." His television shows would sometimes feature "Scott's Bunnies", a bevy of female followers in thong bikinis. (He felt he could "probably teach Hugh Hefner a thing or two" about sex.) When he found himself under investigation by the authorities for alleged fraud, he assembled a band of wind-up toy monkeys, then proceeded to smash them to pieces on television with a baseball bat.
Scott enjoyed a lifestyle that included a chauffeured limousine, a mansion in Pasadena, 24-hour bodyguards, several ranches and a stable of more than 300 thoroughbred horses. It would be easy to dismiss him as a charlatan, yet he also spent lavishly on charity. When the Los Angeles Central Library was damaged by fire, he organised a telethon that raised $2 million, and there were many other examples of well-judged philanthropy. In consequence he acquired powerful friends who were generous with their testimonials.
During show-downs with the authorities, Scott seldom hesitated to drop a few hefty names to aid his cause. When, during the 1970s, the California Attorney General's office launched an investigation into Scott's church (and several others) following allegations of financial malpractice, the investigation was dropped after the state legislature passed a law barring prosecution of civil fraud against tax-exempt religious organisations.
The son of a travelling preacher, Eugene Scott was born on August 14 1929, at Buhl, Idaho. When he was six, his mother gave birth to premature twins, one of whom died within hours. The following month, Gene began having convulsions and his mother saw a stairway come down from heaven: "Two angels walked down and they stopped in front of Gene," she recalled later. "I said, 'Oh no, Lord, you can't take Gene!' and they just went around him and picked the baby up." The surviving twin died but Gene was saved; it was clear that he had been spared for some purpose. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Gridley in northern California where Gene's father took over as pastor of an Assemblies of God church after the previous incumbent crucified himself.
Young Gene was an exceptional student. "Do you know you have a genius for a son?" asked a teacher on his school report. He ended up at Stanford University, where he took a doctorate on the works of the protestant theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in 1957. Despite having no formal training in theology, Scott then taught briefly at a Midwestern Bible college, helped Oral Roberts to establish his university in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and joined his father's church, the Assemblies of God movement, where he soon established himself as a brilliant preacher and fund-raiser.
But in 1970, Scott renounced his membership of the denomination to launch his own ministry. Five years later he was invited to take over the Faith Center Church at Glendale, California, an ailing evangelical enterprise which boasted four broadcasting stations and a $3.5 million debt. He agreed on condition the church leaders gave him carte blanche to do what he wanted. To his surprise, they accepted, and he went on to build his huge evangelical empire.
Scott had several run-ins with the authorities. In 1983 the Federal Communications Commission stripped the church of three broadcast stations after he refused to hand over financial records. Later he frustrated attempts to scrutinise the church's finances by instructing contributors to sign pledge slips stating that he could spend the money however he pleased.
When Scott was diagnosed with cancer, he decided to "give God the first shot" before resorting to conventional medicine. By the time it became clear that the Almighty had stayed his hand, it was too late. He died on February 21, and is survived by his third wife, Melissa.

Mrs. Pastor Melissa Scott was at San Quentin mens prison last week. Our neighbor's husband is in there. They have a little girl who idolizes her dad. Our whole town says he isn't guilty of the crime he was convicted of. There is new evidence we pray will change his sentence, but it takes time. His attorneys are working on it.

2-As to Scott's "secrecy" about previous marriages, I suspect he just didn't deem it necessary to talk about those unhappy experiences.

In the 80s he acted like he was a confirmed bachelor, and that Christine Shaw was just someone he had with him all the time to provide an alibi in case false accusations were ever made against him. I remember hearing him say that as long as he had to have someone with him all the time, it might as well be a woman, because otherwise people would accuse him of being homosexual. The Christian Church is the only establishment I know of whose primary requirement for membership is admitting guilt of sinful behavior! I don't recall Dr. Scott claiming sainthood. He was a brilliant scholar exploring scriptural meanings by personally translating their earliest versions from the original languages. His antics on tv were calculated to demonstrate his rejection of church doctrinal hypocracy. He mentored Mrs. Scott throughout their marriage. Few theologians are as well qualified as Pastor Melissa Scott to continue his work. Obviously the delivery style of a young woman is different from that of an old man - and she has not yet developed her own. Continue praying for her.

Back in the fifties/sixties Stanford wasnt even close to the school it is today and education as a doctorate is ridiculed in much of the academic community as being "soft".

I visited Pastor Scott's church in Glendale in the early '80's to get a first hand view and ear full from the flamboyant preacher...One thing that he got off the road about when preaching that peticular day was Woman Bashing...he repeatedly admonished his flock that day that women should be picture perfect, not overweight, and subservant to her man and God. I imagine he must have seen a frumpy woman near the front of the audience that day as he would not let up on his "message"...Either that, or he had his eye on some woman he was trying to impress in the front row....

I am deeply saddened by this.
I learnt to love God and our Savior Jesus Christ from watching and learning from his teachings.
I hope that Dr Scott's wife /widow will carry on with the teachings.

I used to watch Dr. Scott back in the early '80s when I was in college. Rather that being evil,he was amusing, much like a baby's atempt at talking. Dr. Scott was a businessman in the capitalistic world of free enterprise. That his business was preaching a bunch of idiotic drivel as interesting and insightful as watching a bowel movement does not vitiate his right to conduct business. Based on hearsay accounts of his material possessions, it would seem he was fairly successful at convincing weak minded people with the intelligence of a comatose kitten to give him money. Insofar as the "doctorate" degree he was so proud of, I would gently remind people of another egomaniacal, pathological hypocrite with a serious personality disorder who also had the title of " doctor" precede his name; Adolf Hitler. Well, I don't know anything of Melissa's past except for what I've read on here. All I know is that I saw only ONE of her sermons last week and I was intrigued by what she had to say. It was clear that she was well read on what she was speaking of and had spent time reviewing and working on her material. That's just from a first impression.
Everyone who has criticized Dr. Scott, and Melissa Scott, have really shown your ignorance as Christians, and also sinners in need of grace. Christ came not to save the righteous but sinners. My grandfather who was an episcopal
Minister required a collage education. My father took over his ministry when he died but was removed because he did not have the education credentials necessary for the job. As strange as it might seem it really requires an enormas amount of schooling to become an minister. I am curius what background she has as far as schooling.
It's abit of a stretch to call Dr. Scotts teachings uninteresting or unintelligent. Questioning the spiritual inegrity is certainly fair. As far as his wife, she may well be saved I guess. I've only recently came across Pastor Melissa Scott's broadcasts and it's put a spark in me that has me reading and questioning my values.
I've never seen Dr. Scotts broadcasts until recently and I must say he was a very knowledgeable and gifted teacher, BUT also a person who traveled the road to glory his way not by the highway.

I've read about her not having a degree in "whatever", after listening to her teach I find she is far more knowledgeable about scripture than any of her doubters will admit.

I'm sure once Dr. Scott went to his glory(or not) there was plans being set to gain control. She was placed in authority of that church and I'm sure she has shown that she has claws, like any mother protecting her cubs.

I had never heard of Dr. Gene Scott until trying to find information on Dr. Melissa Scott, whom I have only recently noticed on late night/very early morning television. I always try to watch for wolves in the sheep pen, so when someone speaks in such a way that they are hard to pin down to a set of beliefs, I investigate.
The Christian community has little to say, that I can find. (Could be she is not taken seriously). The official website for their ministry has no statement of beliefs, which to me is always suspect. Any Christian should be wary when beliefs are not straightforward and directly stated.
I wasn't sure why, rather than simply using translated Scripture (the Bible in some trustworthy English translation) she opts to translate every word herself and give a complete description of it. A good preacher may, on occasion, explain a word here or there from the Greek where it is relevant to the understanding of the passage, or where translations differ. I watched this woman for an hour and have no idea what point she was trying to make, if any, because all she did was translate and tell me not to miss something. After her comment that her congregation which was present as the video was made (for a church service I suppose)was to read the Greek on the board if they could, and she "knew they could", I was given the impression that the knowledge of language was being used to cloud rather than clarify, leaving anyone watching OR in the congregation who could not follow feeling inadequate to judge and left to trust whatever she said.
My advice to anyone is never to believe anyone based on reputation or claims, but to test everyone who claims to be a Christian pastor by Scripture. In order to do that you have to study it for yourself, and stop trusting everyone who says they are Christian. The qualifications for a pastor can be found in I Timothy, II Timothy and Titus, if anyone is curious.

It was tortuous for me as I cannot listen to a mental masturbater, it makes me ill. From first impression, and they are usually good, this woman is a power hungry, head driven, intellectual who will never get to the point because she does not have one. She is hopelessly trying to look smart but does not have enough the holy spirit to even start. Maybe someone should tell her that women are not supposed to teach pulpit, very clearly stated in the new testament by Paul. Maybe she thought to skip that part.
I remember watching Dr. Scott back in '82 or '83 when cable TV was just coming out. He used to light his cigars with a hand grenade lighter. He would say that if you learn from him you owe your tithe or whatever to him and it was none of your business what he did with it as that was between him and God. Well, if you believe in all that, I suppose he had good points.

My mother still talks anout hearing Dr. Scott in Calif when he was involved with Melodyland Christian Cneter in CA. She said he preached a sermon called the "Valley of Baca" (sp) That one serman got her through the hardest time in her life. She said Dr. Scott was very proper and wore a 3 piece suit.
She said there was some kind of accusation of "Heresy" and Melodyland church took all of Scott's tapes off the shelves.

I read through all the comments. I came across Dr. Gene Scott back in the late 70's and while I did not watch regularly, I watched often enough that I got the jest that his ways were out of the norm. Recently, I discovered his replays of his later days and his new wife Melissa Scott. I found some sermons of his to be intriguing, and hers rather difficult to follow. However, here in was my concerns. First, every time I called the 800 number, and I did so numerous times, I could get NO information and everyone was very rude. In fact, I was actually hung up on. It is answered as her answering service? One time I was told I would get a call back. I did not expect Melissa Scott to call me, but I thought someone would at least call and give me information. But no one ever did. I asked about the King's House. I still do not understand what it is. All I was told was you had to have a number and watch the show 2 times a week and call in. I asked if they had computers so they could pull up those numbers and what exactly was one to report on. I still have no clear answers. I was seriously considering sending in a few dollars but felt I needed to wait. Then I heard Melissa Scott say one night "You send your money and it is not anyone's business how it spent." She also stated that Dr. Gene Scott ordained her Pastor. I found that disturbing also. I began to research further. I don't care what her past is, because we are forgiven. I do care if she is still affliated in anyway with the former sites and receives royalties, etc. I don't care if she has a degree or that she teaches as long as God has set her apart to do so. While there are learning curves, there are some things that are basic to Christanity as to how leaders are servants and not the other way around. The reports that are posted are disturbing in that area. Since I am off in Tennessee, I have not witnessed anything first hand but I do know that enough red flags have come up that it has curtailed any active involvement for me. I am more concerned about the people who have been hurt or wounded and would turn away from the Lord or not come to Him at all due to this mess. I am not going to judge their hearts, but I can examine their fruits.

I would remind each and everyone of you who are interested in learning the gospel, the "truth" and the "Word" to exercise discernment. What one was is irrelevant. We are to "judge" by one's fruit. Yes, it does take money to run a church. Does it really matter that a "teacher" is a woman? or a sinner? Is sin not sin, no sin lesser or greater than another? Rather than gossip and flash on the past, I advise all of you - listen to the teachings and compare those teachings to the Bible. If you want a Saint for a teacher - good luck - not in this age, not today. We learn from other sinners that have received the blessings of discernment, knowledge and wisdom. Was not Solomon the wisest of earthly men also a sinner? Do you people really expect perfection from your teachers that you must gossip and accuse? Personally, I'll learn from an ex-porn star who teaches accurate and complete Bible teachings any day of the week over a TBN, WORD, DSTAR, CTN or INSP minister who confuses biblical passages for gain. Dr Gene Scott taught, and taught well. Every body comments on his behavior. Read carefully. Did'nt David sin greatly? Did'nt Solomon Sin greatly. Was'nt Peter call ed a son of thunder because of his anger, and denied Jesus later? Did Jacob steal Esau's blessing? Yes all of that happened with those great men of biblical times. Dr Gene Scott is no different. Those men that I spoke about was used of God for His devine plan. Dr. Gene Scott was no different. He was used of God, and gave understanding that no one could give me on the television. Nobody has gotten in dept like him in todays time. Really glad I found this site and I'm afraid it confirms some things I've suspected since discovering Gene Scott back in the 1980's. I watched him in curiosity for a short while and then relegated him to the round file of viewing not worth my while.
When I discovered him again recently (but probably after he had passed away), I found his presentations more palatable but not more useful. Melissa was the curiosity this time. A quick look at the Youtube clip and more especially the various writeups from attendees/former attendees on this site have confirmed my worst impression that Gene Scott and his young wife are/were primarily entertainers at best and scam artists who fall short only of Jim Jones at worst.
I will certainly be looking for an expose on them. Their miscreancy will not keep me from a growing interest in continuing my Christian walk or enjoying more closeness to God the Father and Christ through His Word and through the leading of the Holy Spirit.
People need to pray once and for all for Melissa; whether or not she has made a true confession of faith, it seems to me she is in grave spiritual danger. That doesn't mean she needs or deserves financial support, however.
As well, I think it would be better if she were to will the Bible exhibit items to a suitable institutional recipient instead of pawning them off on the internet, and then to find respectable employment other than as a "pastor" or in the Red Light District of the film world.
I hope she reads this and takes heed.
As for those of us on either side of the line of "they're great" and "they're despicable," I think those who still think the Scotts are okay need God's enlightenment, and those of us on the other side need to be sober in our condemnation so that we don't also fall into sin.

When I looked for information on the Scott ministry I found this site. I for one don't believe in any one religon or church to be the choosen one. But I do believe and know for a fact that God will provide you with the truth. Pray for understanding and guidnes before and after you read your Bible, this will open your eyes more also your hearts. Know that we all are born under sin thru Adam and like wise born unto life thru Christ. God says that David was a man after his own heart. Why? Because David showed love "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind." Now what Mr.& Mrs Scott did or didn't do is not up to me to judge. I find there teaching inspiring. I do follow up on the scripture that is laid out in there sermens along with the bible dictionary, I haven't found anything to make a case agenst what they are teaching.(SO-FAR) But I have only watched 4 of the programs. I just wanted to say PLEASE PRAY AND READ YOUR BIBLE AND PRAY FOR UNDERSTANDING. Jesus put it the best when he said "When an unclean spirt goes out of a man, he goes through a dry places, seeking rest, and finds none." Also " Do you not yet understand that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and is eliminated? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man."

I have read many of these posts and have could not remain silent. I am ever so thankful I serve a God who forgives!! With my past I need it. Apparently many of you do not and I am thankful that many of you were obviously able to live perfect lives witout the need to be forgiven. The only difference I can see between my life and the lives of Mellisa Scott and Gene Scott is I have not yet been chosen by God to be blessed with wealth, power, or fame. If it means that I would be subject to the type of treatment shown in these posts then I pray to God that I never receive wealth, fame, or power. Submit yourselves to the only one who claims the right to judge our holy father.
You're missing the point. Critics of Dr. Gene and Pastor Melissa Scott here aren't claiming perfection or judging anyone's soul. Only Jesus was perfect and on God, the Lord of Hosts judges our souls.
Unlike most ordinary sinners, Dr. Gene and Pastor Melissa Scott abused the trust placed in the office of a pastor, who is ordained to serve their flock. Pastors are to guide in God's word, not to make up their own words and rules as though they are gospel. Even Dr. Scott quoted the bible that those who are charged with higher office will be judged to higher standards.
However, when pastors lie to their trusting congregation it's an offense against God's family and against God. It's blasphemy. These two blast other Christians and hold themselves up as superior to the men and women they are to serve and shepherd. Yet Gene and Melissa Scott lie and cheat as they yoke people freed by the blood of Jesus into a carnal bondage to them here on earth. It's despicable, senseless and there's no excuse. Scott's church, neither am i a fan. As a man, there was nothing about him that i found impressive. What was clear was that he taught the Word as well and with more balance between spirit and intellect than any in his generation. If you could look beyond his external demeanor and actually listen to the teaching, you would you would learn more in an hour than you would in a week long seminary class. One word for Gene Scott..."unpretentious". He didn't hide his intentions behind make up, golden podiums and goofy TV grins, gold cufflinks or permed hair. What you saw is exactly what you got. If you gave to his ministry it would mainly be because you value what you are learning and not because are 'weak' as has been implied by most. I would hazard a guess that there are many ministers and christians out there who would never publicly declare something favorable about Gene Scott, but secretly watch and learn from his teachings. That is why these detractors seem to know so much about what is happening in his(scott)' ministry and teaching. Those archives he had on his website 24 hours a day for years were a treasure trove and any biblical scholar worth his salt would be forced to agree. Gene Scott was a refreshing departure from the mainstream Christian media.
Those of us who knew Dr. Gene Scott well, worked for him and saw how he treated others and what he said in private KNOW BETTER! Dr. Gene Scott was the absolute antithesis of unpretentioius. He was highly arrogant, comfortable in his trampling on the rights and properties of others. He was oblivious to the risks he placed his loyal inside circle in by encouraging misconduct on several fronts, then laughing about it. Dr. Gene Scott loudly proclaimed his special elevation above all man in all times, since the apostle Paul.
Dr. Gene Scott had two distinct sets of rules; one set for himself in which lavish carnal excesses defined freedom and the other set for everyone else who better not make a mistake or heed the commandments literally.
He was a cruel meanspirited megalomaniac who
used God like a prop in his fictional church world.
Dr. Gene Scott enjoyed inflicting emotional pain on those he controlled. He was so full of himself and his sense of always being right that he didn't examine himself. No one ever saw Dr. Gene Scott questioning if he was doing God's will, wondering if he had been too harsh on some unempowered person he ripped to shreds personally and financially. He uniformly spoke that what he was doing, even evil deeds upon brethren, as though God was always for what he was doing and against what others chose to do. When the circumstances were reversed and he took the other side of a dispute, again Dr Gene Scott was always right.
He'd laugh at people being sheep and giving him all their money. Dr. Gene Scott developed a true cult in every sense of the word, to his gain and the psychological, emotional, spiritual and financial loss of others. For many, he was more a tool of the devil than an instrument of the Lord.
3/16/07 -- What a fascinating read all around, this entire blog, from one extreme to the other.
I can't believe this guy, Dr.Gene Scott, has been around for over 20+ years on TV and I only just "discovered" him on late night PAX-TV within the past 2-3 months. At first I would keep flipping past him on the remote control because he "looked a bit fritzy in appearance" not to mention the at-first-glance scribbled-whiteboareds.
But eventually I stopped on his program and actually watched it and I was blown away. It was an excellent sermon about each one of the apostles, such detail and richness, and what seemed to be such depth of understanding, as if the speaker, Dr. Scott (Gene), could relate personally to their flaws as well as their triumphs. I was hooked after that, but in future nights channel-surfing it seemed the Mrs. was on TV more often than he, so I would pass her by until the other night I did watch her but, as has been said, she did not have near the "depth" of teaching that he had.
I had enjoyed his Hebrew/Greek explanations, but she was a bit too slow getting to her points.

Eventually I learned Gene had already long passed away, and these were repeat shows I was seeing. I actually had felt "sad" that he was gone. It had been on my "to do list" to research this guy, and tonight was the night, and Whoa Nellie! :-/ Yow!
Such a CONTRAST. I've probably only seem him preach/teach on TV about 10 times so far, and I've never seen him do any of the things described. No cigars, cursing, etc. He actually has come across as a "humble" guy who is all too aware of his sins and faults, as he would comment now and again how he has learned the hard way, etc. etc. so I just felt like he must be somebody who has had to Really Struggle with himself, but that he was totally dependent and relied totally on God to be forgiving of someone like him with such evidently painful flaws.

So I am WONDERING: Did Gene Scott become more "aware" of his faults in his later years? Did he really begin to "clean up his act" possibly as he got older?
Or, are they only airing his more "respectable" sermons, where he actually comes across as a "humble" person?
If he had/has not changed one iota from the examples given in this blog, and most especially the one link to that Windows Media video where Gene Scott had on that hat and cigar and was cursing up a storm, well, my immediate reaction to that video was that the man obviously has a brain disorder, a mental illness or personality disorder. Genius oftentimes blends with "madness" (by "madness" I mean "insanity," rage, etc.) My guess is he possibly had Bipolar Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder, or something to that effect. That was my FIRST impression after seeing the video tonight. Lack of impulse control, inability to take criticism, lashing out, etc.
Did anyone else have these thoughts? Or, does everyone really think he did it on purpose? (somehow I don't think anyone can be that way "on purpose," but that there must be an underlying mental illness, or PD, etc.)
I actually felt bad for him, seeing him out of control cursing up a storm in that video. If anyone has ever dealt with people with mental illness and/or personality disorders, you'll know what I mean.

As for Mrs. Scott, I haven't seen her cursing and intimidating her congregation yet either. I would imagine they don't air THOSE specific shows, eh? Would PAX-TV (now ion Network) even allow shows like that? Even if it's all true -- and I'm not saying it isn't -- she also could have a personality disorder because as is said in the mental health field, dysfunctional people are usually drawn to each other subconsciously, without their even realizing it in the beginning.

Incidentally, just earlier tonight a prior sermon of Gene Scott was on TV, and I was actually thrilled to hear him say he was a "Paulinist" and that w/o Paul Christianity would never have made it. I tend to agree with the Pauline dispensational position.
It was after the show that I came to the web to look up the Gene Scott website, and I see he has extensive audios/videos, many which sounded like subjects I would have liked to hear. But after this blog, I am rethinking Dr. Scott as a teacher, unless he "learned meekness" in his last few years of his life? Or no?

If Mrs. Scott needs money, they should sell that cathedral. I think it is rather ghastly and "haunted" looking, including the eerie paintings displayed there, and also shown at the website.
Also, that painting of Christ in Pilate's chambers, done by Gene Scott, and shown at his site, also caused me pause. It looks like it was painted by a "mad man" ("insanity").
I wonder if there are 'embedded images' in any of those paintings (refer to the DVD, "Rape of the Soul" re: embedded images in Catholic literature. It will blow you away).

Additionally, one of the news articles on this blog of the life of Dr. Scott said he at one time either schooled or worked with Oral Roberts. Oral Roberts is a Freemason, as are his proteges such as Ken Copeland, reportedly. I began listening to Mrs Scott several months ago and was fascinated by her knowledge of the Bible and language. I could see where she might be a source of contention to some but I found her to be a joy.
Last night she taught on "Transubstation" and I was "shocked" to find out she believes the Catholic church to be in SERIOUS error.
I being a Catholic felt an urgency to check out her "teachings" which lead me to here for instance.
It doesn't give me joy to hear of the sorted past but I'm grateful to know all I can so I can make up my own mind. As one reader posted here "Get what you can from the Bible and make up your own mind."
We should always examine Our lives and our beliefs carefully.
In this way Dr and Mrs Scott had certainly assisted all of us today.

Dr. Gene Scott and Pastor Melissa Scott have single minded focus on extracting money to build themselves up at the expense of others they take advantage of. If their victims read the bible or find Jesus along the way that's a blessing, which happens every day all over the world with the spiritual abuse Gene and Melissa Scott are famous for.
I agree with the plaintive call of the previous commenter, for those who are rich to share just some with those who are poor. What a great and wonderful gift from God to have wealth to share and experience the reward of touching lives of those that megalomaniacs like the Scotts oppress to being further downtrodden and broken.
The bible says the tithes are to be given to the Levites and the poor. Everywhere throughout the old and new testament, the spirit of charity and mercy for those less fortunate is spoken by God and Jesus for all to hear and be mindful of.
Yet Gene and Melissa Scott turn the true giving message into a spiget for cash flow pointed only TO themselves and FROM others including the destitute. They push people to give beyond their means by taking out loans, filing bankruptcy and not paying taxes. It's despicable and indefensible regardless of what occasional crumbs they may toss out to the starving homeless flock.

With that cue, everyone looks down so as not to be caught by the Melissa gestapo greeting one another, or smiling. And for those who criticize judging one another, they need to understand we are commanded in the Word to rightly judge, and beware of such things as these. It should be a wakeup call for every christian who has been exposed to this deception (God saw fit to tune you in to Dr Scott you know). It proves just how dangerous a path it can be to shepherd on such sacred grounds as these. My curiosity surrounds not the question of whether or not Dr Scott's ministry was genuine (it wasnt). But whether or not he either took himself seriously, or exactly knew himself to be the deceiver he was. And the evidence in my opinion sadly points to the latter, and I refer you to 2 Peter's teaching on false prophets to end my comment here.

Didn't God give him prophecies about all sorts of heavy happenings and even told him to seal them up until the end days? Now for all you nonbelievers, if you would shut your disgustingly foul traps of oral diarrhea and open your stupendously closed minds and spend 1/3 the amount of time actually listening and studying, instead of criticizing others, you might begin to see that maybe these people are on to something. Dr. Scotts' essay on The Resurrection is one of the most powerful arguments for the existence of Jesus and his raising from the dead that I have ever read. Now that is something to hang your hat on, because if that is true we're all in for one hell of a show. Oh, by the way, maybe you people that like to throw the phraseology about hell around so much should look up the true meaning of hell; ignorance of that magnitude really makes one look stupid.
I think it's hilarious that no-one has posted since this argument above. I too love to listen to Pastor Scott and Dr. Scott when his video's are played. God is the only one who can judge us, and in the meantime if it helps anyone to understand the Bible I think what they're doing is worthwhile. What is wrong with everyone that you feel such hatred and vile talk is necessary? You seem to be absolutely taken by the fact that you believe Melissa was in the adult porn world. Isn't she also allowed to be forgiven? Do you know her heart? Don't watch them if you don't trust what they're doing, and don't send any money. It's a free country.
