GENESIS
Now the snake was more subtle than any wild animal of the fields that Yehowah God had made. And he said to the woman, Has God indeed said, You shall not eat of every tree in the garden? 2
And the woman said to the snake, Of the fruit of the trees in the garden we may eat; 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, nor shall
you touch it, or else you will die. 4 And the snake said to the woman, You will certainly not die; 5 for God knows that on the day that you eat of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil. 6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to give understanding, and she took some of its fruit,
and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made
girdles for themselves.
8 And they heard Yehowah God's voice going to and fro in the garden in the breeze of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the face of Yehowah God, in a tree
in the garden. 9 And Yehowah God called to the man, and said to him, Where are you? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 Then he
said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gayest to be with me, she gave me of the
tree, and I ate. 13 And Yehowah God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The snake beguiled me, and I ate.
14 Then Yehowah God said to the snake,
Because you have
done this, cursed are you above all cattle and above every wild animal of the fields;
on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity between
you and the woman, and between your descendants and hers;
he shall wound your head, and you shall wound his heel.
16 To the woman he said,
I will surely multiply your pain and your conception;
in
pain you shall bear sons;
and to your husband shall be your desire, and he shall rule over you.
17 And to the man he said,
Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and
have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, and said, You shall not eat of it, cursed is the ground because of you;
in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. 18 And thorns and
thistles it shall produce for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the fields. 19 With sweat on your face* you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground;
for out of it you were taken;
for
you are dust, and to dust you shall return. * lit nostrils
20 And the man called his wife's name Eve* because she was the mother of all living. 21 And Yehowah God made of skin clothes for the man
and his wife, and clothed them. 22 And Yehowah God said, See, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil; and now, in case he puts out his hand, and also takes of the tree of life, and
eats, and lives for ever- 23 therefore Yehowah God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken. 24 And he drove the man away; and on the east near the garden of Eden
he placed the cherubim and the flame of a sword turning itself, to guard the way to the tree of life. * Heb hawwah that is Living
