But the fact of the matter is that the fire of self-love and love of the world burns within them, and insofar as that fire is what motivates them to speak, preach, and act, they are ruled by the faith
that is persuasion; and then they know nothing other than that a thing is so. But when the fire of those loves ceases to burn in them they no longer believe any of it, indeed many of them refute it.
From this it is evident that faith which is no more than persuasion is faith on the lips but not in the heart, and so is no faith at all.
