Gaia, a.k.a. Mother Earth

Some people believe that the total of life on our planet has a collective superconscious and that this force is what some call 'God', or 'Goddess.' This entity is seen to exist out of time, and views humanity as a momentary event, like a cobweb, or a mosquito.

This entity wields unimaginable power, and could easily sweep us (or some of us) off the map, like swatting a fly. Millions of humans have died cruel deaths at the whim of this "Gaia." Hopeful fantasies about some beneficent intelligence are human constructions. And if we destroy ourselves, that would also be one of our constructions.

Much environmentalism is mixed with a reverence for the 'Divine Mother,' which unfortunately helps to discredit it among the doubters. Whether or not one is a 'Pagan' though, environmentalism's point can be made with the simple maxim: "Don't crap in your own bed!" A colorful metaphor that illustrates the reality of Earth's limited resources, and humanity's tendency to breed like rats.

The dinosaurs dominated Earth for 150 million years. Humans have been here only fifty thousand.
