Agni Yoga (1929) - 124: 124. When the Teacher severs His
ties with a disciple, the ring received from the Teacher must be returned
by the disciple. This should not be seen as a rare occurrence. The karma
of obsession or weakness of spirit can easily set a
barrier between the disciple and his Teacher. Self-correction by the one
expelled can bring him back to the point at which the path was
interrupted. The disciple must understand the need for haste and apply
himself to this task.
Agni Yoga (1929) - 205: Who can describe in words the
entire succession of Teachers? There can be a realization of it as a
serpent of knowledge; otherwise lacking this, there is only darkness,
sleep, and obsession. There is no need to terrify, but
one should tell all who have approached the Yoga, "Your support is the
Teacher. Your shield is devotion to the Teacher. Your downfall is
indifference and duplicity of thought."
Agni Yoga (1929) - 607: 607. If, instead of having recourse
to courts and prosecutions, people would apply psychic energy, the
incurable disease of crime would become a mere matter of ordinary
investigation. Physicians should look into this as a stage of
obsession. Applying psychic energy without changing one's
customary understanding of crime would be harmful.
Hierarchy (1931) - 157: 157. You understand what each
apostate inflicts upon the Teacher. If a special ray is assigned to each
disciple, the severing of this thread must have a reaction. It is not
without reason that the Teacher insistently questions the knocking ones,
"Art thou not a traitor?" The severing of the thread between the Teacher
and the disciple can be achieved only by a slow process, but impetuous
betrayal is usually very painful to the Teacher and to the traitor.
Verily, the traitor's reason becomes obscured, and through the wound
caused by the broken thread obsession occurs most easily.
One should consider this process of betrayal as a physical danger, not to
speak of the spiritual consequence. One should ponder how cautiously one
must select disciples in order not to contribute to cosmic harm. Hence,
each Teaching gives strong examples of betrayal. For betrayal there is no
need to be precisely a Devadatta or a Judas. Even without these prototypes
space is filled with fractured rays.
Hierarchy (1931) - 190: 190. It is necessary to understand
it literally when I say that a considerable number of sicknesses should be
treated with psychic energy. Infection of the nerve substance will always
be the primary cause of various diseases. In the infection of the nerve
substance the Higher World unites with the lower; through a gap in the
nerve substance any intruder can penetrate, beginning with
obsession and ending with cancer. Yet the nerve substance
can be protected only by psychic energy. This training of psychic energy
will be the true prophylaxis of humanity. At least a pure thought can be
applied, thereby protecting the entrances to the nerve spheres. Even such
a simple measure will be useful. Also, psychic energy will be the best
purification during the period of a hidden disease. But terrible is the
decomposition of the nerve substance under the influence of drunkenness
and all kinds of vices. Ponder upon the state of the subtle body, when the
subtlest nerves assume the significance of a skeleton! Bones belong to
Earth, nerves to the Subtle World, Light to the Spirit.
Heart (1932) - 77: 77. There are many who become obsessed
during the transition of mankind to spiritual creativeness; as if someone
had duplicated the keys to loose locks. It is especially necessary to
study people cautiously. Moreover, it is necessary to remember that the
obsessed have a peculiar logic, full of contradictions. If one wants to
help them, one can, by the force of suggestion, drive out the one who is
in possession; or one can leave the person in peace, and even, if
possible, isolate him entirely. Because the entity which obsesses a person
is not so much in need of the person himself, as of the influence exerted
through him upon those who surround him. The worst thing is partially to
vex the obsessed person by demanding from him the sane logic of which he
is incapable. It is bad to begin to pity aloud the one who is obsessed, or
to condemn his contradictions. The strong and striking command or
isolation can ease the fate of a weak heart, because through weakness of
the heart obsession creeps in. The fire of the heart
singes all woolly visitors.
Heart (1932) - 77: The rejection of the Teacher cuts off
all possibilities, especially when the denial enters into the
consciousness long before obsession. Thus, people often
arouse already latent negations and, of course, the consequence is
primarily manifested by the rejection of the Teacher, for each chaotic
state of consciousness expresses indignation at creativeness and
cooperation. In chaos are rooted the seeds of evil, which are suppressed
by hard experience. But at the present time there is an unprecedented
number of obsessed persons. Darkness also desires to assert itself.
Heart (1932) - 147: 147. Repeat to physicians that they
should observe people during the so-called healthy state. The most
interesting manifestations for physicians will not be observed during
contagious diseases. The principle of contagion itself reminds one
somewhat of obsession, but, of course, the most
instructive manifestations of psychic energy will not take place during a
contagious disease. Nevertheless, this condition is never taken into
consideration. How, then, can we expect expedient discoveries when the
most important - psychic energy - is entirely unnoticed, not even
disputed, even not denied, but simply unnoticed together with the most
insignificant manifestations? The most successful method will speak again
about psychic energy. Someone closing his room with all locks will
secretly read of psychic energy, and without confessing it to anybody will
nevertheless think about it.
Heart (1932) - 169: This aspect of life ought and must be
investigated with a scientific purpose. Of course, it is difficult to
conquer obsession, especially because after
obsession the gates remain open to visitors for a long
time. Very intense observation is needed to protect the one who has
admitted an obsessor through irritation, which opens wide the door. The
heart is the best protection against obsession, but one
must watch that the heart should not fall asleep.
Heart (1932) - 205: 205. It is laudable to defend the Sign
of the Lords. It is practical to train oneself in the realization of the
closeness of the Lords. Just as it is impossible for man to dispense with
food, so must he cling to Hierarchy. Not like a timber leaning for
support, but as a vigilant guard let him be prepared to take the defense
each moment and thereby multiply his strength. Likewise, although you know
enough about the One Light, I nevertheless repeat that you should multiply
your forces. Even the cross itself has no strength without the heart. Even
the purest prana will not penetrate a wrathful heart. Even Aum will remain
as naught before a deceptive and treacherous heart. Thus let us remember
in order that no obsession may penetrate the heart. You
have examples of obsession before you and you see what is
being lost in the days of shameful weakness.
Heart (1932) - 213: 213. Obsession must be
very clearly defined. One must not be astonished to notice a number of
obsessed persons near the hearths of spirituality. The reason for this is
that the dark ones strive to reinforce their guard. Who, if not the
obsessed, can best help the dark forces? In this field the multiformity of
obsessions is incalculable. One must primarily discriminate where there is
Good, and were essentially there is harm. Thus, the flaming heart will
discern immediately where obsessionis concealed.
Heart (1932) - 218: 218. What I indicated about
obsession and Satanists, you yourselves now observe
daily. Without complaint and sternly on guard you will attain victory. Let
sternness be like a sharp sword. Thus, all who blaspheme must be punished.
Heart (1932) - 219: 219. There is much tension; one must
understand how closely the world situation is bound with the work. It is
impossible to divide them when the general situation is equal to an
unprecedented battle; therefore I command you to remain undivided, imbued
with the tension of the moment. There must be no retreat; it is necessary
unitedly to press the obsessed ones. If a jest be permitted, one may call
this phase of the battle, the battle against obsession.
Verily, the dark ones try to strengthen themselves through
obsession. But their methods cannot be of long duration,
for they disintegrate themselves precisely through
obsession. You know how obsession
gradually destroys the organism; the paralysis of certain nerve centers is
inevitable. Hence, physicians could do so much useful work by directing
attention to obsession. Ask the physician whether he did
not notice special peculiarities in the eyes of obsessed persons. For one
can judge duality of existence by the eyes. But I do not refer to a purely
superficial manifestation such as a dull or shifting glance. Other
symptoms must be observed. One can also observe symptoms in the walk, the
voice, and even a change in the weight. Do not ask psychiatrists about it,
because their theories are fossilized, but physicians of the new type can
observe impartially. And yet, how greatly such observations are needed,
now when obsession is becoming epidemic! Sensing the
weakness of human hearts, hordes of sly spirits avidly rush to capture the
flavor of Earth.
Heart (1932) - 235: 235. It already has been said that upon
discovering obsession one must either drive out the
obsessor or leave the obsessed person alone in quiet and solitude; because
then the obsessor, unable to find a field of activity, will become bored
and depart. Of course, it is best not to allow the obsessed persons either
weapons or alcohol, but in such a way that they shall not in the least
feel their isolation.
Heart (1932) - 266: 266. Do you not notice that there are
many obsessed ones around? One should pay attention to the unprecedented
obsession. In this way one can fight it. It is primarily
necessary to realize with whom one deals; for to realize means to conquer.
Heart (1932) - 283: 283. Pure thinking is the best
disinfectant. It is time to accept thinking as having a chemical reaction.
So, too, the manifestation of Armageddon should be understood not only as
the usually accepted war but also in accordance with the events of the
entire life. The obsession that was mentioned is a
significant evidence of the Great Battle. True, suicides and also physical
and spiritual calamities permeate the convulsed planet. Special types of
diseases of the brain and nerves and also many perversions are to be found
among men. One is astonished at the waverings of the spirit. One becomes
indignant at the way in which the best are met with threats and hatred, as
though Earth itself strove to disintegration! Of course the mad ones do
not behold all the luminous warriors and let the dark ones drag them down
into the abyss. Thus, one must fortify oneself with all strength through
the Hierarchy. Even upon an ordinary battlefield, one should not cut
oneself off from communications. Thus, by the simplest examples one must
cognize the Great.
Heart (1932) - 325: 325. Is not a blow upon the heart like
a stroke upon a harp or zither? Does not the reverberation of the heart
speak of invisible strings, which are the extension of the nerves into the
subtle state? Is it not scientific to observe these blows upon the aura,
when the eye, or heart, or Chalice, or crown of the head, very obviously
receives repellant arrows? Yet it is noticeable how much more strongly the
heart reverberates than all the other centers. It is not without cause
that the heart is called the Sun of Suns. Should not the act of
transmitting to far-off distances be regarded as a subtle, but completely
natural condition? It is necessary to subdivide the realm of so-called
hysteria into many divisions. At present it ranges from
obsession to refined spirituality. Of course, one should
not permit such contradictory confusions, for it is distinctly
unscientific to throw everything into one pile, merely in order not to
distress the brain with deliberation. Otherwise St. Theresa may fall
within the definitions of obsession and the most
loathsome demon will be brought closer to the altar. It is inadmissible to
agree to the confusion of various conditions!
Heart (1932) - 481: 481. When I speak of the touches of the
Subtle World, I do not refer to the sensation of a handclasp or a touch
which calls attention. These manifestations may be unexpected and hence
elude observation. But the invisible web and the so-called intrusive
thought can be analyzed. Naturally, not in insane asylums, but precisely
on healthy people can the Subtle World be studied.
Obsession, of course, provides a succession of
manifestations, but the lower spheres must not be made manifest for they
are dreadfully contagious.
Heart (1932) - 484: 484. A "black heart" was always
considered as the symbol of great peril. Only the most unwavering courage
could resist this misfortune, but such courage was rarely found. The
degree of courage is tested by the force of the peril, and true courage
waxes stronger in accordance with the intensity of the danger. She, Our
warrioress, knows the degree of courage of which I speak. When the dark
legions are attacking, the consequences vary. During injury to the entity,
obsession results; whereas the purified spirit may be
subject, not to obsession, but to illness. You have read
how our Brother, already on a high step, nevertheless became ill from dark
opposition. Such consequences must be remembered because the battle is
great. Of course, the effects of the dark arrows may be lessened, but
personal caution is needed nevertheless. The same striving must be applied
for the acquisition of courage as a remedy against the black poison.
Indeed, physical weakening does not mean spiritual weakening; on the
contrary, the expenditure of spiritual riches sometimes becomes unlimited.
Heart (1932) - 535: 535. Observation of the heart must
begin from childhood. In this way one can become aware of certain periods
when the spirit gradually takes possession of the body. Likewise, through
constant observation one can perceive how the proximity of beings from the
Subtle World influences the heart. Many unexplainable heartbeats are of
course due to the influence of the Subtle World. Many cessations of the
pulse can recall the danger of obsession. Many tremors of
the pulse are characteristic even from the age of seven, they reveal the
completion of the entry of the spirit. Such evidence should have been
known to physicians long ago, but instead of observation they begin to
apply all sorts of narcotics, laying the foundation for an early
destruction of the intellect. Thus, one should not inflict coarse ignorant
measures upon the heart. It should be remembered that if the heart is the
mediator of the highest worlds, then the methods for sustaining the heart
must be refined. It is unwise to pity the coarsening of humanity and
neglect the care of its chief organ. The heart of humanity is sick. First
of all, one must render healthy the sphere of the heart, certainly, if the
people with to avoid a catastrophe.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 88: 88. It need not be
thought that only karmic conditions create wavering. Often the cause must
be sought in obsession. The waverer himself thinks that
he must proceed warily - but as if this anxiety concerned only himself!
The past of many waverers would be instructive for the schools.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 132: 132. Western physicians
talk without cause about the difficulty of working with Us. We have never
been opposed to experimental methods. On the contrary, We welcome each
unprejudiced action. We approve when a member of the British Medical
Society speaks about accurate methods of research. We are prepared to
assist the Russian scholar in his work on immunization and immortality. We
rejoice when the Japanese surgeon makes use of astrological dates. We are
giving assistance to the Latvian physician in discovering the ocular
symptoms of obsession. We are ready to assist each one,
and to rejoice with each one. Indeed, We unceasingly insist on
observations, and We direct to attentiveness in every way. We speak about
reality; We affirm the absurdity of abstractness. Thus, We wish that
physicians and scholars of the West would consider justly Our
collaboration. It must be understood that the time has come to clarify the
facts by discarding the husks. It is time to acknowledge that many
superstitions are still growing in the backyards of isolation. Thus, to
superstition will belong the condemnation of all that is "not mine." The
liberation of thinking will indeed be the adornment of true knowledge.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 137: 137. Add, when writing
to the Latvian physician During observations of the eyes of the obsessed
he must not lose sight of the fact that an observed symptom may change. At
the approach of fiery energy, the symptom may disappear, as it were. The
obsessing agent may begin to rave, or it may withdraw, taking the symptom
with it. Therefore, the observation should be carried on without sending
the fiery energy beforehand, otherwise this action will turn into
expulsion of the obsessor. Such an action is excellent in itself, but it
is beyond the scope of the oculist. The same reaction is sometimes
observed in skin diseases which, under the influence of fiery energy,
alter their appearance and even disappear. Let us not forget that
obsession is sometimes manifested cutaneously, or by
twitchings of the face. Nevertheless, the Latvian physician deserves
praise, for it is not easy to perceive the crystals of brown gas.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 185: 185. Of course, every
one is at liberty to determine his own destiny and even his final
disintegration. But soulless beings are highly infectious and harmful.
Obsession occurs easily during such a depleted condition.
Do not regard it as an exaggeration that almost half of the planet's
population is exposed to this danger. True, it varies in degree, yet once
the decomposition sets in it progresses rapidly. One can notice the same
thing amidst past cultures. The fires of the spirit died out like smoky
bonfires, and all smoke is poisonous unless some useful substance is added
to it.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 278: 278. The physician
should not be surprised to observe that symptoms of
obsession are assuming the proportions of an epidemic.
They are far more numerous that the human mind imagines. Moreover, the
varieties are highly diverse - from almost imperceptible eccentricity up
to violence. I commend the physician for noticing a connection with
venereal diseases. Truly, this is one of the channels of
obsession. It can be said that the majority of those
suffering from venereal disease are not strangers to
obsession. However, in one way the physician has proved
too optimistic - although venereal disease facilitates the entry of
obsession, its cure does not lie in an eviction of the
obsessor. Thus, also, irritation in extreme forms may invite an obsessor,
but one must not expect that the first smile will eject him. A complete
science is contained in such observation. The physician is correct in
wishing to visit not only insane asylums but also prisons. It would not be
out of place to visit the stock exchange also, or the deck of a ship in
time of danger. One can observe chronic, protracted or temporary symptoms.
Likewise, the perspiration can be observed. Many characteristics will
gradually become evident to the observer. Among them, details of the
Subtle World will be traced. One thing, however, remains incontestable -
the ejection of the obsessor does not depend on physical methods. Only
Agni, only the pure energy, can oppose this human calamity. I repeat the
word calamity, because it is commensurate with the extent of the epidemic.
A great number of physicians will regard Agni as a superstition and belief
in obsession as ignorance. People so often endow others
with their own qualities. But, at the same time, obsessors of all degrees
will be troubled by these investigations.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 280: 280. The physician must
also be warned to be cautious with the obsessed. When approaching the
obsessed, one should remember not to hold even the conjecture of
obsession too definitely in mind. One must not forget
that an obsessor is highly sensitive to thoughts, once he suspects that
his presence is discovered. He can express his malice in many ways. By
destroying an obsession one can make many enemies,
therefore one should conduct one's observations without personally
disclosing the fact.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 283: 283. Also tell the
physician that not all obsessions are necessarily dark ones. There may be
influences from the middle spheres, which, in the belief of the obsessors,
are directed for good, although no especially good results will be
derived. The obsessors are of such low degrees and the vehicles within
their reach are of no high development, thus, duality of thinking,
imbalance, and a lack of self-control result. There are many such people ,
who are called weak-willed; in fact, the two wills weaken each other. One
can cure such persons only by giving them the work that they prefer, but
in very intensive measure. The obsessor becomes irked, remaining without
an outlet during such concentrated work, for every obsessor seeks to
express his own ego. Thus, the physician can observe different types of
obsession, but, in principle, such epidemics are quite
inadmissible in the human advance toward perfection. Moreover, the concept
of the Guru greatly helps to safeguard from obsession. In
the case of a weakening of will, the Teacher offers his surplus force in
order to bar the intrusion of the alien dark influence. Naturally, the
Teacher with a high consciousness is able to determine sensitively when
his help is needed. Indeed, such a guidance has nothing to do with
coercion.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 362: 362. You have read about
the epidemic of hearing voices. The organism acts like a radio receiver.
Such acute sensitivity could have been of use, but the trouble is that
while certain precise cosmic dates draw near, human consciousness lags far
behind. Therefore, instead of a beneficial result, there is a harmful one,
contributing to obsession. Many such abnormalities occur
also in other domains when the consciousness, strangled by mechanization,
drowns in madness.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 373: 373. The fiery
understanding of obsession is called "Urumiya." Man is
not the only one to possess this straight-knowledge; certain animals close
to man sense this dreadful state. Horses and dogs in particular sense and
resent the proximity of obsessed persons. In ancient China there was a
special breed of dogs, highly prized, which was very sensitive and useful
in detecting the obsessed. In ancient times it was also a custom to
exhibit the horses and dogs before guests, observing at the same time the
reaction of the animals. Many envoys were put through this test. One
should observe that cats also sense obsession, but
usually quite inversely. Obsession induces happiness in
them. For example, when a cat senses an obsessed person or his impelling
presence, it does not hide, but walks around mewing happily, whereas a dog
bristles up and either tries to hide or to attack such a person. One ought
to develop Urumiya in oneself, not only for protection but for the purpose
of expelling the obsessor. Very often a single conversation about the
significance of Agni begins to act upon the obsessor. Fearing fire, the
very mention of the fiery energy angers him and forces him to retreat.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 415: 415. Truly it is
difficult to understand why persons serving the same goal disparage each
other. Straight-knowledge, even in a small degree, should be developed.
But mutual disparagement is one of the most shameful sins. I know of no
better definition of it than sin, so destructive is the work of mutual
annihilation. This can be explained as a certain aspect of
obsession, but shame to those who, after having
approached the knowledge of the fundamental principles, stoop to such a
base state. Let the belittling and the destroying ones ponder upon their
own consciousness. They are far from the fires of the heart.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 437: 437. Let us write down,
and tell the physician, about obsession. Indeed, there
may be cases where the obsessor gains such control over the body of the
obsessed as almost to dislodge him. One can also encounter cases where the
obsessor is so empowered by the vital force of the obsessed that the
expulsion of the obsessor will cause death. He has so usurped the psychic
energy of the obsessed that the latter loses his vitality upon separation.
Therefore expulsion must always be carried out most cautiously. At first
one watches the diet of the patient and observes his psychic energy. If a
decline of vitality is noticed the weakened heart must not be strained.
Expulsion is generally easiest during an attack of fury. The aroused
energy helps to overcome the possible decline of heart action, which might
otherwise end in complete prostration.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 438: 438. As with everything,
fiery self-disinfection is the best prophylaxis. Precisely Fire protects
against obsession. Precisely Agni is the panacea for
cancer, tuberculosis, and all other diseases. But until people assimilate
the significance of Agni, one must have recourse to vegetable and mineral
expedients. The simplest, most natural, and most essential property of
everyone seems to be the most neglected. You know to what an extent those
who remembered about psychic energy escaped many illnesses. You saw it and
became convinced. During the approach of fiery energies it is necessary
that people be not ashamed to acknowledge the fiery principle in
themselves. This will be the cultivation of Agni.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 486: 486. When I advise
caution I have in mind varying conditions. The state of health is bound up
with many cosmic causes. Thus, one should not look for causes only in
colds or indigestion. The chemism of the luminaries is analogous to
substantial doses of medicines and mixtures which can perceptibly affect
the organism. Similarly, nervous pains may be traceable not only to
obsession but also to reaction to the currents of space.
Why be surprised at the large number of nervous diseases? More than once
have I indicated the horror of such epidemics. They are contagious and
under many forms have one common basis - precisely, affliction of the
subtle body. Now one can understand once again why it is so necessary to
study the fiery energy without delay.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 520: 520. The vulnerability
resulting from injury to the aura is terrible. One can imagine how one
breach in the aura leads to the mutilation of its entire structure.
Drowsiness, which can be noted when the aura is rent, originates from the
consistently increased activity of the fiery energy when directed toward
external radiations. During the process of restoration, the organism, and
especially the heart action, is in a state of depression. For this reason
I deem caution necessary in one's actions as well as during the
counterblows. During the battle why should one burden the hearts of
friends? One could perform numerous experiments revealing how the
violation of the radiations has actually been reflected upon the heart.
People accept with reluctance advice about observing caution in regard to
their own radiations; but even prior to their being photographed, science
is already aware of the existence of these radiations from every object.
One should have full respect for the human organism and understand that
each shock harms the astral body primarily. Besides, if organisms have
worked together for a long time in unity, they can injure each other even
more severely. And such injury will be not only of each other, but also
will be reflected upon others near to them. One should therefore most
assiduously eliminate all conflicts. One can visualize a dark legion which
makes an onslaught upon each break in the aura. It is dreadful to feed
such vermin with the inner layers of radiations. The protective net alone
blocks the attack of the dark forces. Each breach in the aura also
threatens one with obsession. Let us therefore be even
more cautious.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 555: 555. It is as easy to
fall prey to obsession as it is difficult to effect
cooperation with the Subtle World. In the first place, people as a rule
give little thought to true cooperation; and in the second, they
altogether refuse to admit the existence of the Subtle World. During
obsession a most objectionable violation takes place, and
rational cooperation is eliminated from the consciousness. Many dwellers
in the Subtle World would like to offer their knowledge, but they are
denied the opportunity because of various prejudices and fear. If you only
knew what great turbulence now exists in the Subtle World when the new
division of humanity rocks space! One should not assume that the present
time is an ordinary one; it is unprecedented and can inaugurate a New Era.
Nevertheless, create heroes - thus it is ordained.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 643: 643. Verily, one must
have discrimination to ascertain true significances. Many are the
illusions and phantoms that obscure an evaluation of the real advance of
the spirit. Many appearances of the dark forces attempt to seduce or
terrorize one. Such attacks are especially preponderant in the vicinity of
obsessed or mentally diseased persons, who are like open gates, not only
attracting entities to themselves but creating a kind of channel for all
surrounding people. The border lines of psychic illnesses are quite
imperceptible, therefore I advise great caution. I consider it useless to
expend one's strength in all experiments with obsession
when one's own ill health disturbs the equilibrium. Whisperers can attach
themselves to the ear that is ailing. and only a firm consciousness can
shake off these asps without delay. You already know that no sickness
should be neglected. One must immediately inoculate oneself with vigor and
not forget about Agni.
Fiery World - Book 1 (1933) - 662: 662. The growth of
consciousness is usually considered a slow process. Yet it can be
perceived how, even in the midst of earthly conditions, consciousness
grows before one's very eyes. Certainly, for such growth there is needed,
on the one side, tension and, on the other, rapport with the magnet of an
already fiery consciousness. One may rejoice when at each progress of
consciousness the ancient acquisitions of the spirit come to life. One may
rejoice when the essence of life is regenerated through the proximity of a
kindled heart; however, one must discern the difference between broadening
and illumining consciousness and a low psychism. We are not at all pleased
to see that intercourse with the lower spheres of the Subtle World is
increasing. One must not forget that the lower entities, even aside from
permanent obsession, can benumb, as it were, the
consciousness. From the lowest comes only the lowest.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 86: 86. Many criminals will
turn to labor under suggestion. Just as drunkenness and other vices,
ailments of crime may be cured by the command of the will. It must not be
forgotten also that many crimes are committed under the influence of
obsession. Consequently such people need to be cured, and
not punished. Definitely, during such treatments, increased, systematic
labor has a decisive significance; for the obsessing entities every labor
is hateful. They try to cast one into chaos, but the essence of labor is
already a countermanifestation. One ought not be distressed by the thought
as to whence will come the strong suggestions. They are many, but they are
dissociated. When the Institute of Psychic Energy will be established, it
will bring together many useful co-workers. It should not be forgotten
that an Institute of Astrology would be very helpful toward the
verification of data. Not long ago governments were ashamed to pay
attention to heavenly luminaries, as well as to human powers, but psychic
energy must occupy the attention of enlightened people.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 99: 99. If it is difficult
sometimes to concentrate thought, also it is not easy sometimes to get rid
of thought. However, this quality also must be attained. Physicians have
noticed haunting thoughts. Such a state can be the result not only of
obsession, but also of inertia of the brain centers. One
must know how to set aside, as it were, a useless intrusive thought. To
this end one may perform little exercises, forcing oneself to consciously
put aside a thought, as if massaging the brain. Many people fail to
understand at all what We are talking about, but such immobility of the
brain must be routed by different tasks, so that a preceding thought in no
way colors the following one. Such a coloring usually deprives the new
formations of preciseness.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 223: 223. Above all else I am
concerned with the imbalance of the world. Obsession is
developing, and it threatens to become insanity. Many countries are
governed by madmen in the fullest meaning of the word. Never before has
this manifestation of mass obsession occurred. Why
scientists do not pay attention to such a calamity is incomprehensible!
People commit millions of murders. Is it possible that no one realizes
that this is a hotbed of obsession!
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 236: Each epoch has its
expressions. One should not cling to old methods when it is possible to
apply new understanding. Even in the Ancient Covenants we see prophets who
were always saturated with spirit. And much later, formulas, numbers, and
rhythms were studied. But some have considered such methods too near to
invocations, and thus belittling to the Higher Principle. Especially at
present, during the epidemic of obsession, people must
seek heart communion.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 249: 249. Not magic but
God-inspiredness was ordained in the ancient Covenants. When Higher
Communion began to be interrupted, people themselves compiled magic from
the earthly world, as a means of forced communion. But, as everything
which is forced, magic ends up in the darkest manifestations. The very
boundary line between black and white magic becomes elusive in its
intricacy. Therefore, on the path to the future one should eschew all
magic. It must not be forgotten that the old methods of magic were
connected with other forms of life. Of course, magic is based on precise
fulfillment of technical conditions, but if all the formulas of life have
been altered, then too all magical effects must be correspondingly
changed. This is why contemporary magic has sunk into necromancy and the
other low manifestations. All those who study the mechanics of formulas
fail to take into account the fact that they were written down for a
completely different application. In addition, they completely forget that
the higher formulas, and all the conditions, have not been written down
altogether; and if they have been noted at all it is in such symbols that
now their meaning is quite obscured. Thus, contemporary studies of magic
either amount to senseless scholastics, or else, flowing down, they lapse
into the black mass. Therefore We speak much-needed words, in advising the
abolition of magic. Let it be left to the dark necromancers. There is too
much obsession on Earth. The sole path to the Higher
Communion is through the heart. Violence must not stain this fiery path.
Can people possibly think that the invocation of lower entities can go
unpunished! And what sort of improvement of life could result from such
evocation? No one can point to a benefit resulting from necromancy, nor to
a heart which has been uplifted through necromancy. One must turn to the
short and higher Path, which will bestow health of spirit; and thence
comes the bodily health. The abolition of magic will be a white stone on
the path of the World.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 277: 277. Not only santonin,
but also certain other vegetable substances help toward seeing the
symptoms of the aura. However such mechanical reaction is undesirable.
Each poison cannot but react on the nerve centers, if applied for long.
When we come to speak about the fiery heart, this recognition of
radiations comes about naturally. Besides, it is most fitting to sense the
quality of the aura. Because many tints appear highly intermingled, and
just the viewing of it does not give an understanding of their essence.
Thus, sometimes a blue aura may be exposed to an undesirable yellow
radiation, and as a result there is a greenish light, but such a
combination can be distinguished from a pure green synthesis. Similarly,
violet may be the result of the approach of crimson. Thus, a single
glimpse alone means little. One must perceive through the heart the
essence of what is taking place. Thus, for example, it may happen that due
to illness the radiation will grow dim, but the fiery consciousness will
apprehend that the nature of the radiation is not bad, and that only
because of accidental sickness has it been temporarily changed. Likewise
it may happen that the radiation may be subjected to an external
influence, such as results from obsession. Here also only
the fiery consciousness will apprehend the true cause. Therefore, when I
speak about future photographing of the auras, it must not be forgotten
that fiery straight-knowledge will also be needed for this.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 417: 417. The ancient
prophecies say "When all becomes darkened, then people fancy that
everything is permitted them." Actually darkness makes people insane.
Daring is not madness. Everyone who dares is conscious of ordained
possibilities, but the madman manifests opposition to the law of
Existence. There is a fine boundary line between madness and daring. The
torch of the heart is needed in order to find this boundary. Having once
entered the domain of madness, one can hardly turn back again to a wise
daring. Rishi were daring; saints were daring; but they did not admit
madness, for it is first of all hideous. It leads to
obsession, with all its dark consequences. How ugly is
the picture of the obsessing entity trying to expel from the body the
subtle vehicle! There can be nothing more hideous than the spectacle of
two subtle bodies disputing about one earthly envelope.
Fiery World - Book 2 (1934) - 445: 445. Among psychic
maladies the most frightful, almost incurable, are treachery and
blasphemy. Once a traitor, always a traitor. Only the strongest fiery
shock can purify such an infected brain. If such a criminal condition
emanates from obsession, this is likewise not comforting.
Is it possible to conceive of cooperation with a traitor or a blasphemer?
They are like a plague in the house. They are like a fetid corpse. Thus,
the Fiery World has no consolation for traitors and blasphemers.
Fiery World - Book 3 (1935) - 57: 57. If humanity would
regard everything positive with the same attention as everything negative,
then much more could be manifest in cosmic construction. For instance,
mania, obsession and evil use of hypnotism have entered
into the consciousness; even though only partially understood,
nevertheless they have become implanted. But positive manifestations are
little realized, It is customary to accept the fact that people acting
under the influence of mania or obsession have acquired
quite a force, which is demonstrated by the action. Why, then, is it not
possible to direct the consciousness to the all-powerful influence of the
spirit! It is necessary to bring into daily life the understanding of the
magnetism of the spirit. All the negative forces put together are not to
be compared with the power of the magnet of the spirit. On the path to the
Fiery World one must learn to evaluate the magnet of the spirit.
Fiery World - Book 3 (1935) - 467: 467. One may observe
examples of cruel obsession. It is needful that
physicians fully understand such a beastly condition in order to know how
to cut off the infection. It is right to isolate the obsessed similarly as
lepers. Certain degrees of obsession may be incurable.
Brain and heart may degenerate from dual pressure, but the steadfast,
upright, cognizing spirit knows not obsession.
Fiery World - Book 3 (1935) - 505: 505. The silver thread
is a radiant symbol of the link and of trust. It is possible to bring the
concept of the bond into such a state of clarity that the thread will be
almost perceptible. The appearance of the Image of the Guide will no more
forsake one than will the thread of the bond. But the will is free; it can
snap the strings of any harp whatsoever. I already have told you how
lamentably sound the strings which are forever broken. Verily, even in the
raging of the most frightful obsession are heard the
wailings of the broken strings. Amid chaos, most shocking indeed are the
moanings from such ruined threads. Diseases are born of such criminal
actions. Traitors break the most sacred threads. That is why betrayal is
the worst offense against the Fiery World. What, then, can be more
shameful?
Fiery World - Book 3 (1935) - 551: 551. Some will not
understand about the necessity of indicating the Subtle World and then
later forewarning against it. Yet there is no contradiction. The higher
spheres of the Subtle World deserve attention and respect, but the lower
ones can be harmful. The pure in heart are not subject to the infection of
obsession, but tainted hearts can attract frightful
entities. Also, there should be no discordance in understanding of the
Subtle World when the Fiery is mentioned. The very summits of the Subtle
World are almost touching the Fiery World. Similarly, under certain
circumstances the dense World is close to the Subtle. Thus, let us once
and for all apprehend the bond of the Worlds as steps of Infinity.
AUM (1936) - 183: Thus throughout life flow activating
influencing both coarse and lofty. It is right to know both the darkest
obsession and the highest inspiration. Call them what you
will, such reactions do exist.
AUM (1936) - 206: 206. During experiments upon psychic
energy, one should pay attention to the different shades of the
manifestations. Primarily, observation will reveal a general design, but
the attentive observer will detect a great number of original details. For
example, you have discerned an unusual cruciform movement above the brain
of the one observed. In reality, such a movement is very deplorable. It
signifies either an advanced stage of obsession, or
madness. Likewise one can also observe that in an extremely brief interval
the reaction may be sharply altered. Therefore, it is necessary to carry
out repeated observations. Psychic energy, like the waves of the ocean in
its multiplicity of currents, is influenced by many conditions from within
and without. It is very important to observe such temperature curves of
the spirit. It is likewise important to observe when this same reaction
appears - for both the living and the dead. The reason for such
manifestations are many. It may be that life has already flown away; it
may be that sickness is in possession of the organism; but in any case
such a manifestation merits attention.
AUM (1936) - 224: 224. The thought that psychic treatment
has already been satisfactorily established is futile. Attempts to cure by
means of light and sound have been weak and not synchronized. No one is
occupied with the study of the correspondence of aroma to color and sound.
But the principal error lies in the fact that there are almost no
physicians who would understand the correspondence of the worlds. Without
realization of these fundamentals it is possible to sink into the narrowly
material plane, yet the sphere of psychic energy embraces all planes. It
can be recognized only in all subtlety. Thus, the physician cannot speak
about obsession if he himself has no conception of the
Subtle World! Thus, the physician cannot understand treatment with light
if he cannot distinguish the scale of colors. He who likes the crudest
music cannot discriminate a refined tonality. He cannot prescribe
treatment through aromas if he himself cannot distinguish them. My purpose
is not to belittle physicians, on the contrary, I would wish to equip them
for the saving of humanity. Poisons have increased too greatly. Many
resources have been directed only to the destruction of psychic energy, so
that not only in cities but also in the midst of nature prana is already
being violated by the intrusion of extraneous currents. Meanwhile it is
necessary for humanity to understand that it has no right to poison
Earth's atmosphere; mankind is responsible for the hygiene of the planet.
AUM (1936) - 250: The antiquity of such experiments is
incalculable. Besides, they have served in state and judicial matters. It
is necessary to recognize the extent of the unique usefulness of such
experiments with psychic energy. They provide a barometer of illnesses and
disturbances of the spirit, as well as of sincerity itself - and also of
obsession.
AUM (1936) - 305: 305. Obsession and
self-poisoning are close companions. They are equally little recognized by
people. During the process of self-poisoning, obsession
is especially easy, but under obsession poisoning
ultimately takes place; such poisoning is ineradicable. Certain people
assert that during obsession the health not only does not
fail but even improves. This is a great error, the apparent good health is
the result of the nervous tension only. Moreover, the intrusion of a
foreign psychic energy inevitably opens a channel to various infections.
Obsession is not psychism, but it affects the entire
organism. Let us say definitely - obsession is not only a
psychic sickness but also an evidence of infection of the whole organism.
Many epidemics have obsession as their origin. Indeed,
the dark obsessing entity is not concerned about the health of its victim.
Every disease is in itself a dissolution which is pleasing to darkness.
Two psychic energies cannot live long together. Periodically there may be
a relaxation of the obsession, such a method is employed
by the obsessors if they value the victim.
AUM (1936) - 306: 306. Aspiration toward the Higher World
is the best recourse against obsession. Thinking about
the Higher World is the best proven antitoxin. Exalted thoughts not only
influence the nerve substance, but also purify the blood. Experiments with
the composition of the blood in relation to the thinking of the patient
are highly instructive.
AUM (1936) - 368: Obsession takes place
only when an access has been opened. Moreover, before
obsession takes place, the evil one whispers and prepares
the weak spirit. To those inclined to evil appear the entities attracted
by them. The karma of the obsessed is a grievous one!
AUM (1936) - 374: 374. Always warn against lower psychism,
which can lead to obsession. It is no contradiction that
energy can be directed to good or to evil. The very same force can serve
for construction or for destruction. Only lofty thinking and purity of
heart can be a pledge of the good employment of the power. Each one must
keep in mind that he has been entrusted to serve for the progress of the
world. All this has already been said, but you rightly observe that the
ignorant can find a contradiction in it. The bad will augment evil, and
the good will serve the Good.
AUM (1936) - 374: When people are desirous of making
objections, they are prepared not to admit the simplest truth. Whither is
it possible to direct energy, if will and thought have been directed to
evil? Naturally, the power will flow along the dark channel. Whoever
wishes the lowest will receive it. Unalterable are the words about
obsession, because it represents a danger to the
perfecting of life. Furthermore, intermediaries must not be of a low
order. Ignorance and malice can attract only conformable responses. Each
one must strive only toward the best.
AUM (1936) - 491: Many remember their past lives, but
through obscuration of consciousness they call forth their own past
imaginings. One needs to be careful also not to censure too greatly the
mistakes of others. Aside from conceit and ignorance, there may be only
partial errors without base motive. Indeed, there may also be different
forms of obsession and whispering with evil intention,
but enough has already been said about obsession.
AUM (1936) - 598: Humanity already recognizes the subtle
energy. People do not know how to study it and apply it to life, yet the
concept itself is unquestionably manifested in different fields of
science. A multitude of proofs are coming in from all sides. Already quite
a few skeptics do not dare to object and ridicule. Not far distant is the
time when the unity of the fundamental energy will be acknowledged. The
individuality of the energy will be no obstacle to its study but will
delight searching minds. Epidemics of obsession will be
arrested by physicians. From fragmentary observations deductions will be
drawn and life will receive many conscious ameliorations. Open to those
who knock; give help to the sick; set aright the one in error; but be
careful with the scratching ones. Especially when you are striving for
unity, leave behind every trouble-making thing, for it is not suitable to
higher communions.
Brotherhood (1937) - 566: 566. There are many causes of
madness. Let us not exculpate ourselves merely by
obsession, let us ponder on all the ugliness of excesses.
Also, let us not forget that, owing to a desire to escape karma,
breakdowns of consciousness may occur. Man, feeling the unavoidability of
something, strains his will to such an extent that a darkening of
consciousness takes place. Moreover, brain sicknesses can also occur. The
reduction of insanity depends upon physicians. And too, the idea of
cooperation will constitute a salutary aid.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 1 (1938) - 43: Man's
knowledge cannot encompass all the attributes of the spirit. Even on Earth
one knows about obsession, but usually in an incorrect
sense. One knows about twin souls, but this is understood as little as
obsession. Yet history is witness to those who have been
inseparably linked in all their existences. Let us extend these attributes
into Infinity, and much will become intelligible.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 1 (1938) -
56: Recently you heard about an instance of
obsession. It was an almost hopeless case because the
sick woman was tired of struggling and had become a follower of the
obsessor. Also, those who surrounded her increased her sickness. Usually
such obsessed ones should be taken to a new place and their surroundings
changed. It was not possible to influence her by writing, but through
personal magnetism the growth of terror could be stopped. People do not
understand how much one's surroundings encourage the development of
certain illnesses. Thus one should become accustomed to being in the
position of a physician. Our Inner Life is filled with healing activities.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 1 (1938) - 59: 59.
Urusvati, through her straight-knowledge, discerns superhuman action. Let
us examine the different kinds of human action. There are actions of free
will, karmic actions, and actions performed under the influence of
obsession. But there can be special kinds of action that
do not fit into these categories. We call them superhuman actions. Chosen
people fulfill Our missions, consciously applying their best will and
abilities, yet their actions do not originate from free will or from
obsession. Nor can they be called karmic actions, for in
them karma may have been exhausted, or new karma started. Comparing all
these, one may come to the conclusion that such action is a special
expression sent by Higher Forces.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 1 (1938) -
167: Examples of this madness can be observed in various eras, and
when these persecutors are asked what causes their fury and makes them
attack the Teaching that they hate so persistently, the answer is almost
always the same - they are unable to stop their attacks. Such lack of
self-control indicates obsession.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 2 (1938) - 284: 284.
Urusvati knows that at times the human consciousness expresses itself
abnormally in a dual way, as a kind of split consciousness. This can be a
sign of obsession, but there are cases in which the
duality is the result of the promptings of past incarnations. There are
also times when the future is glimpsed, and as if hypnotized, the
individual is drawn away from the present reality.
Supermundane - The Inner Life - Book 2 (1938) - 285: But
how do you explain to people that their leaders and their teachers are
insane? How can you convince a nation that immediate measures must be
taken for the restoration of its health? Indeed, Our prescriptions would
be quite different from the measures offered by the medical authorities!
This will be especially obvious in the psychic sphere. People do not yet
acknowledge obsession, and though many books about the
subject are available, a cowardly consciousness will deny the facts. Many
materializations can be demonstrated, but those who want to deny will
somehow justify their disbelief. |
