Remarkable Portrait Engraving

on 1884 Morgan Dollar

Pictured above is an 1884 Morgan Silver Dollar. The obverse is lustrous silver. On the reverse has been engraved a portrait of virtually photographic quality, as well as Masonic symbols of of the owners titles and degrees, i.e. Past Master, Scottish Rite Mason and York Rite Mason.  This side of the token is also dated 1885.  The distinguished looking gentleman was most likely an important figure within American Freemasonry.  For anyone wishing to do some detective work, we have only one clue to his identity: This piece was consigned by a collector who purchased it many years ago in an upstate New York coin shop (in the Albany area).  Should anybody discover the identity of the Brother engraved on this coin we would be happy to share his personal and Masonic history with everyone else!

A special "Thanks" to marygrace10 on eBay for sharing her pictures and text of this most wonderful coin with us!
