ANDESINE , a member of the See also:

group of minerals known as See also:plagioclase felspars, occupying a position in the isomorphous See also:series about midway between See also:albite (NaAISi3O8) and See also:anorthite (CaAl2Si2O3); its chemical See also:composition and See also:physical characters are therefore intermediate between those of the two extremes of the series. Distinctly See also:developed crystals or crystallized specimens are rarely met with, the See also:mineral usually occurring as embedded crystals and grains in the igneous and gneissic rocks, of which it forms a component See also:part. It occurs, for example, in the See also:andesite of the See also:Andes, from whence it derives its name.
