ARCHIPPUS , an Athenian poet of the Old See also:

Comedy, who flourished towards the end of the 5th See also:century B.C. His most famous See also:play was the Fishes, in which he satirized the fondness of the Athenian epicures for See also:fish. The Alexandrian critics attributed to him the authorship of four plays previously assigned to See also:Aristophanes. Archippus was ridiculed by his See also:con-temporaries for his fondness for playing upon words (Schol. on Aristophanes, Wasps, 481). Titles and fragments of six plays are preserved, for which see T. See also:Kock, Comicorum Atticorum Fragmenta, i. (188o) ; or A. See also:Meineke, Poetarum Comicorum Graecorum Fragmenta (1855).
