PEAR , the See also:fruit of the See also:tree Perna gratissima, which grows in the See also:West Indies and elsewhere; the flesh is of a soft and See also:buttery consistency and highly esteemed. The name avocado, the See also:Spanish for " See also:advocate," is a See also:sound-substitute for the Aztec ahuacall; it is also corrupted into " See also:alligator-pear." Avocato, avigato, abbogada are variants.
