BOUVARDIA , a genus of handsome See also:

evergreen greenhouse shrubs, belonging to the natural See also:order See also:Rubiaceae, and a native of tropical See also:America. The See also:flowers are in terminal generally many-flowered clusters; the corolla has a large See also:tube and a spreading four-rayed See also:limb. The cultivated forms include a number of hybrids. The See also:plants are best increased by cuttings taken off in See also:April, and placed in a brisk See also:heat in a propagating See also:frame with a See also:close See also:atmosphere. When rooted they should be potted singly into 3-in. pots in fibrous See also:peat and See also:loam, mixed with one-See also:fourth See also:leaf-See also:mould and a See also:good sprinkling of See also:sand, and kept in a temperature of 70° by See also:night and 8o° during the See also:day; shade when required; See also:syringe overhead in the afternoon and close the See also:house with See also:sun-heat. The plants should be topped to ensure a bushy See also:habit, and as they grow must be shifted into 6-in. or 7-in. pots. After midsummer move to a cool See also:pit, where they may remain till the See also:middle of See also:September, receiving plenty of See also:air and space. They should then be removed to a house, and some of the plants put at once in a temperature of about 70° at night, with a few degrees higher in the daytime, to bring them into See also:flower. Others are moved into heat to See also:supply flowers in See also:succession through the See also:winter and See also:spring.
