CHERRAPUNJI , a See also:

village in the Khasi hills See also:district of See also:Assam. It is notable as having the heaviest known rainfall in the See also:world. In 1861 it registered a See also:total of 905 in., and its See also:annual See also:average is 458 in. This excessive rainfall is caused by the fact that Cherrapunji stands on the edge of the See also:plateau overlooking the plains of See also:Bengal, where it catches the full force of the See also:monsoon as it rises from the See also:sea. There is a See also:good See also:coal-seam in the vicinity.
