HEN , a See also:

female See also:bird, especially the female of the See also:common See also:fowl (q.v.). The O. Eng. ha;i is the feminine See also:form of hana, the male bird, a correlation of words which is represented in other See also:Teutonic See also:languages, cf. Ger. See also:Hahn, Henne, Dutch haan, See also:lien, Swed. hane, bonne, &c. The O. Eng. name for the male bird has disappeared, its See also:place being taken by " See also:cock," a word probably of onomatopoeic origin. being from a See also:base kuk- or kik-, seen also in "chicken." This word also appears in Fr. coy, and See also:medieval See also:Lat. coccus.
