HIEROCLES , proconsul of See also:

Bithynia and See also:Alexandria, lived during the reign of See also:Diocletian (A.D. 284-305). He is said to have been the instigator of the fierce persecution of the Christians under See also:Galerius in 303. He was the author of a See also:work (not extant) entitled Xoyoc cf tAaXilOac irpos roes Xpcvrcavous in two books, in which he endeavoured to persuade the Christians that their sacred books were full of contradictions, and that in moral See also:influence and miraculous See also:power See also:Christ was inferior to See also:Apollonius of Tyana. Our knowledge of this See also:treatise is derived from Lactantius (Instil. div. v. 2) and See also:Eusebius, who wrote a refutation entitled 'AvrcppnruOis irpos ra 'IEpoeXEovt.
