MAGADHA , an See also:

ancient See also:kingdom of See also:India, mentioned in both the'Ramayana and the Mahabadrala. It comprised that portion of See also:Behar lying S. of the See also:Ganges, with its See also:capital at Pataliputra or See also:Patna. As the See also:scene of many incidents in the See also:life of Gautama See also:Buddha, it was a See also:holy See also:land. It was also the seat of the Maurya See also:Empire, founded by Chandragupta, which extended over all India under See also:Asoka; and, later, of the powerful See also:Gupta See also:dynasty.
