NAVVY , a labourer employed in the digging and excavating of See also:

earth, &c., in the construction of See also:railways, docks, canals or other See also:engineering operations. The word is a shortened See also:form of " navigator," applied during the 18th and See also:early See also:part of the 19th centuries to a labourer at See also:work on canals, to which the name " See also:navigation " is often applied.
