It may be synthesized from See also:toluene; more interesting is its See also:production when See also:acetone dicarboxylic ester is condensed with the aid of See also:sodium. It crystallizes in colourless prisms with one See also:molecule of See also:water, which redden on exposure. Ferric chloride gives a bluish-See also:violet coloration with the aqueous See also:solution. Unlike See also:resorcin it does not give a See also:fluorescein with See also:phthalic anhydride. Oxidation of the ammoniacal solution gives orcein, C23H24N2O7, the See also:chief constituent of the natural dye See also:archil (q.v.). Homo-pyrocatechinis an isomer (CH3: OH: OH= r : 3 : 4), found as its methyl See also:ether (creosol) in See also:beech-See also:wood See also:tar.
