POLACCA , the See also:Italian name for a three-masted See also:merchant See also:vessel, formerly See also:common in the eastern See also:waters of the Mediterranean. The masts were of one piece and the sails were square or See also:lateen-shaped. The name appears in various forms in other See also:languages, e.g. Fr. polaque or polacre, Sp. polacra, Du. polaak or Ger. Polack, and certainly means See also:Polish, although there is no explanation to be found for any connexion between See also:Poland and such a Mediterranean vessel.
