SCENT , an odour or See also:smell, particularly a fragrant liquid distilled from See also:flowers, &c., used as a perfume (see See also:PERFUMERY). The word should be properly spelled " sent," and is derived from the See also:Mid. Eng. verb senten, to scent, to perceive by the sense of smell, Fr. sentir, See also:Lat. sentire, perceive by the senses. The intrusive c appears in the syth See also:century, and is paralleled by the same in " See also:scythe " for sythe.
