STILTED , a See also:term in See also:architecture, given to anything raised above its usual level; it is usually applied to the See also:arch, which is said to be stilted when its centre is raised above the See also:capital or See also:impost. In See also:Byzantine architecture this was frequently done in See also:order to give more importance to the twin See also:arches of the windows, and less to the See also:shaft which divided them. In Romanesque and See also:Gothic See also:work the stilted arch was often employed in the semi-circular apses, where in consequence of the closer juxtaposition of the columns See also:round the See also:apse the arches were much narrower than those of the See also:choir; in order, however, that the See also:apex of all the arches should be of the same height, the apse arches were stilted.
