MAGICAL PASSES FOR NOT-DOING
Pomona Workshop, CA 1998 Unbending Purpose Note: these passes are performed lying down with the calves taut and the toes are pointed toward the ceiling. Always start with right side. 1. Pulling The Band Of Awareness Toward The Chest: The leg lifts about 6 inches, and the foot flexes backwards as if snagging the fringe of awareness. The knee then is pulled upward as far as possible towards the chest. The foot pushes back down as if against resistance, then returns to the floor. Do right side repetitions, then left. Striking Energy With The Heel Of The Palm: On the strikes where only one hand is involved, the other hand is used to shield the opposite side's center of vitality. 2. Striking Energy Forward With One Hand, The Fingers Pointing To The Side: The wrist is pulled pack as far as possible, the palm nearly flat, the fingers pointing in the arm's nominal direction. Do right side repetitions, then left. 3. Striking Energy Forward With Alternate Blows Of Each Hand, The Fingers Pointing To The Sides: Just like 2., except the hands alternate, starting from the right. 4. Striking Energy Forward With Both Hands Together, The Fingers Pointing To The Side: Like the preceding two, but the hands strike simultaneously. 5. Pushing Energy Around The Area Of The Sinuses With The Heel Of One Palm, The Fingers Pointing Upward: The strike is to the center, as if striking the facing energy body's sinus area. The fingers point above the head. Do right repetitons, then left. 6. An Alternate Pushing Of Energy Around The Area Of The Sinuses With The Heels Of Each Palm: The same as 5., but the hands alternate, starting from the right. 7. Striking Energy Forward With One Hand, The Fingers Pointing In The Opposite Direction: Identical to 2., except the fingers point across the body, away from the arm's nominal direction. 8. Striking Energy Forward With An Alternate Blow Of Each Hand, The Fingers Pointing In The Opposite Direction: Like 7., except the hands alternate. 9. Striking Energy Upward With One Hand: The palm faces outward just in front and to the side of the face. The wrist and forearm twist and pull down about 6 inches. The hand remains open in the pulled back, fingers to side position of 2. After a moment to set, the hand strikes up in the direction of the head. Do right repetitions, then left. 10. Striking Energy Upward With An Alternate Blow Of Each Hand: The same as 9. but the hands alternate. 11. A Lateral Strike Of Both Hands: Both hands are held with wrists pulled back and the fingers pointing to the arms' nominal side; the heels of the palms and forearms are brought nearly together, then back out again to the width of the body. 12. Pulling The Band Of Awareness Up Over The Line Of The Horizon: Identical to 1., except that when the knee is pulled up, the calf and foot kick straight up from the knee, and back down before the foot returns to the starting position. Do right repetitions, then left. Beckoning Energy With The Muscles Of The Chest And Upper Arms: 13. The Backward Rotation Of The Shoulders: The shoulders are made to rotate backward; the arms follow the movement naturally. 14. The Forward Rotation Of The Shoulders: The shoulders are made to rotate forward; the arms follow the movement naturally. 15. Striking Energy Laterally With The Elbows: Similar to the Heat movement, the foreams are parallel above the chest, right over left; the elbows push out to just beyond body width. Do right side, then do with left over right. 16. Pumping Energy Up And Down With The Forearms: The arms begin in the same parallel, one over the other state as in 15. They move in unison over the head and down to the waist, in a pumping motion. Do right side, then do with left over right. 17. Sliding One Leg Along The Outer Edge Of The Other Leg: As the left leg is held with toes pointed to ceiling, the right foot is placed on the floor by the outside of the left ankle. Keeping as much of the sole as possible on the floor, but always leading with the edge of the foot (not the toes), slide the foot up to the knee and back. Do right repetitions, then left. Grabbing Energy From The Front: 18. A Strike With The Elbow: The right palm faces outward just in front and to the side of the face. The wrist and forearm twist as the hand grabs energy. The elbow strikes down to the side of the body, without striking the mat. Do right repetitions, then left. 19. A Strike With Each Elbow: The same as 18., but the elbows alternate, starting from the right. There is no pause after the hand grabs. 20. A Strike With Both Elbows: The same as 18., except both arms simultaneously. Grabbing Energy From The Sides: 21. A Strike To The Area Above The Chin: The right palm faces outward just in front and to the side of the face. The wrist and forearm twist as the hand grabs energy. As the palm faces up at the bottom of the circular grabbing movement, the fist uppercuts to a point just above the chin of the facing energy body, the palm facing the face. Do right repetitions, then left. 22. An Alternate Strike To The Area Above the Chin: Like 21., but the arms alternate. 23. A Strike To The Area Above the Chin With Both Arms: Like 21., but with both arms simultaneously. Rowing With Fixed Oars: 24. Rowing Forward: With both fists by the pectorals as if holding oars, the arms circle up and out in a forward ellipse as if rowing with fixed oars. As the fists return to the pectorals, they strike forward simultaneously to arms' length. The rowing motion continues from there. The fists make one and a half circles between each strike. 25. Rowing Backward: Just like 24., but the direction of the ellipses is reversed, and the strikeis down the sides of the body toward the feet. 26. Sliding The Foot Along The Inner Edge Of The Other Leg: As the left leg is held with toes pointed to ceiling, the right foot is placed on the floor by the inside of the left ankle. Keeping as much of the sole as possible on the floor, but always leading with the edge of the foot (not the toes), slide the foot up to the knee and back. Do right repetitions, then left.
