Tips for downloading, saving, opening, and reading text files from the internet

If you left-click the text file links, they will attempt to load into this browser.

I would suggest you not do that ..

It is true that if you know how you could save the text files from your browser after they have finished loading into it...

However, for simplicity sake, I suggest you use the procedure outlined below to simply download and save the text files (*.txt) onto your computer. Then you will be able to open them with the word processing program of your choice.

- Internet Explorer: RIGHT-Click the file name link, NOT the normal left-click mouse button; and LEFT-Click "Save Target As..." .

- FireFox: RIGHT-Click the file name link, NOT the normal left-click mouse button; and LEFT-Click "Save Link As..." .

You will either be prompted to specify which folder you want the file to be saved in; or the file will immediately begin downloading into a default folder location automatically according to your browser's downloads' settings.

After saving the text files to your computer; find the files, and then click on them to open them.

Clicking on a text file will open it with your default word processing program; possibly "Notepad", "Wordpad", "Works", or "Word".

If you are not happy with the default choice, close that window and...

If you are using Windows XP, you can Right-click the file name, and click "Open With...". Hopefully you will see listed the word processing program you prefer to use.

Or, no matter what operating system you are using, you can always start up the word processing program of your choice and click "File" > "Open", or similar, and navigate to the folder location of the text files.

When you open these files in your word processing program, if the text is still running off the right hand side of your screen, locate and check the option "Wrap to Window".

In "Notepad", this is found at "Edit" > "Word Wrap".

In "Wordpad", this is found at "View" > "Options...".
