TO THE
ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITION
|
Two years ago, on seeing the first
French edition of this children's memorial volume, a few individuals in the
United States resolved to bring these children's faces and their story to the
English-reading world. This edition has been a true group effort, linking
volunteers in Paris and in New York. I especially want to thank Susan Cohen and
Howard Epstein for their dedication to this task and general contributions as
editors and translators, and in particular Susan for overall review and Howard
for rewriting the historic account of the Holocaust in France and how the
children were caught in its tentacles. I am thankful as well to Glorianne
Depondt of the FFDJF, the Sons and Daughters of the Jews Deported from France,
who worked tirelessly in Paris on translation of the photo captions. I am
grateful, too, to Peter Hellman, who brought the book to the New York group and
encouraged them to embark on this journey.
Our own continued research
for this expanded volume was backed by Alan L. Gleitsman, who chose Beate and
me as recipients of the1995 International Activist Award. My work on this
edition is in memory of Philippe Potchengueil, deported on convoy 23 of
August24, 1942; he was born on March 3, 1930, the same day that Alan Gleitsman
was born.
