Maurice GERENSTEIN, born on January 3, 1931,
in Paris, and Liliane GERENSTEIN, born on January 13, 1933, in Nice,
were among the 44 children at the UGIF/OSE home set up in Izieu. Their parents,
Chapse and Chendla, were deported to Auschwitz on November 20, 1943, on convoy
62. Chapse was a musician and played trumpet in the Auschwitz camp orchestra.
He survived and emigrated to the United States. Liliane wrote
this heart-rending letter found at Izieu
after the roundup of April 6, 1944, a letter written to God only a few days
before she, her brother, and her friends were deported on
convoy 71 and killed. |
