there was no room to sit. Finally the children
couldn't take it any longer, so I summoned all my courage and opened the false
door. I told the children not to budge and not to scream if one of the Gestapo
happened to catch me. Then I crept out into the apartment and got our clothes.
I looked out the window; there was no one on the street. About seven o'clock I
heard some neighbors go downstairs.
I was afraid there still might be
soldiers on the landings, but at the same time I couldn't stand the fear and
uncertainty any more. So I opened the apartment door and when I saw someone I
knew go by I asked him if the Germans were still there. He said they were gone.
Then he went out and came back to tell me that the street was safe. We fled.
The friend who had built our hiding place took us in.
We had been
saved, thanks to my husband's self-sacrifice.
