Kaul came to Paris
to tell me East Berlin had recognized my Warsaw protest as justifiable. It had
been deleted from my record. As to my Prague demonstration, all I needed to do
if I wanted to get back into favor and regain the right to enter the Democratic
Republic was to write Honnecker that I now had "doubts" as to the timeliness of
that protest. Kaul's efforts were in vain.
It was then that the Barbie
affair began.
