PURSUING BARBIE IN PERU AND
BOLIVIA
So we were faced with a challenge. When we got back
home, we issued a statement that Barbie was undoubtedly in Bolivia. We had the
photographs copied and sent them to Lyon, hoping thereby to uncover some
witnesses.
On October 8, Pierre-Bloch met with Foreign Minister Maurice
Schumann and asked him to intervene with the Bolivian government for locating
Barbie and extraditing him. He also gave Schumann a photocopy of the new German
decision and the group picture. Consequently it would have been child's play
for the French authorities to get hold of Barbie. All that was needed was to
send the picture to the French Embassy in La Paz so that one of the staff
a mere clerk, if need be could show it to porters and bartenders
in La Paz's few hotels. Within a day's time Schumann could have got Barbie's
assumed name, and could have proceeded effectively from there on. But nothing
was done.
I went to France-Soir and gave one of its editors in
chief a copy of the picture so that it could be published and thus uncover
witnesses. It could even be seen in South America, where it would
