Czechoslovakia

Question:

I recently wrote you in hopes of trying to find information on Czechoslovakian Jews during the holocaust time period. I was able toget the call numbers (IMT02-T430 and IMT03-T235), but I am unable toopen the links using the search engine. I am a graduate student in Kingsville currently enrolled in aHolocaust class, any information would greatly be appreciated. Thank you for your time,

Harry W. Mazal OBE Responds:

Thank you for your message. To access the two pages in question simply click on the links below. You can navigate these books bysimply clicking on the small blue arrows at the top and bottom ofeach page. We have tried for the layout to be much like reading anordinary book.

You might wish to look for the following three-volume set in your university library:

The Jews of Czechoslovakia
(Volumes I, II and III)
Avigdor Dagan (Editor)
c. 1968, 1971, 1984 - Jewish Publication Society

Volume III is particularly germane to your work and is possibly one of the best sources of information on the subject of the Jews of Czechoslovakia in the Holocaust. One of our members is a Holocaust survivor who spent many of the war years interned in the Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp.

More rare but equally important is:

Racial State
Gerhard Jacoby
c. 1944, Antin Press

This book describes the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia which was accompanied by an intense hatred and prejudice toward the Jews.

A third book:

The Czechs under Nazi Rule
Vojtech Mastny
c. 1971, Columbia University
ISBN 0-231-03303-6

This book covers other aspects of the Nazi occupation.

You will also find that general books on the Holocaust have much valuable information on the Jews in Czechoslovakia. To wit:

Roads to Extinction: Essays on the Holocaust
Ada June Friedman (Editor)
c. 1980, Jewish Publication Society of America
ISBN 0-8276-0170-0

The book has many useful references to the treatment of Czech Jews by the Nazi occupiers.

Yours sincerely,

Harry W. Mazal OBE
