Adolf Hitler

Question:

How old did Hitler became????

Jamie McCarthy answers:

Hello. I am one of the volunteers who answers questions for The Holocaust History Project.

Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, and committed suicide on April 30, 1945, so he was 56 years old when he died.

Question:

Hi. I have a question. I have to write a short essay on the topic "Was Hitler Crazy". I`ll appriciate if you help me. I hope you`ll send me your answer and arguments as soon as possible, of cource if you want, can and have enough time for me. Thanks.

Daniel Mittleman answers:

I am one of the people who answers questions for The Holocaust History project. While we aren't a homework service, and we very much endorse you doing your own thinking on this subject, I might be able to give you a few pointers to materials that will help you with your assignment.

First, there are many books written about Adolph Hitler. You don't saw what grade you are in, but I read a couple of books about Hitler in high school, so I am sure you can sit down and read one or more as well.

The first book I read was: William Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, Simon & Shuster, New York (1960)

Rich Green, another person here who answers questions, recommends: Explaining Hitler: the Search for the Origins of His Evil, Ron Rosenbaum. The Last Days of Hitler, Hugh Trevor-Roper. The Hitler of History, John Lukacs. Mein Kaampf, Adolf Hitler.

And Jamie McCarthy, our webmaster, and another question answerer suggests: Hitler: A study in Tyranny by Alan Bullock Hitler by Joachim Fest.

Second, here are some web pages I found that may interest you.

http://users.systec.com/kimel/hitjew.html is an essay from the Jerusalem Post about Hitler that touches on opinion of his sanity. http://www.holocaust-trc.org/wmp07.htm is another essay about Hitler, as tyranist.

Then, the Nizkor Project, has portions of the OSS profile on Hitler from 1939. The OSS was the forerunner of today's CIA, so their analysis is very interesting to read. http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/people/h/hitler-adolf/oss-papers/text/oss-profile-01.html http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/people/h/hitler-adolf/oss-papers/text/oss-profile-02.html http://www.nizkor.org/hweb/people/h/hitler-adolf/oss-papers/text/oss-profile-06.html

But I do hope you won't stop just with these web pages and that you will take a look at some books as well.

Question:

Hello I am a Highschool student who is very fascinated in the History the Third Reich. I know Hitler was a gifted speaker and my question is, Did Hitler write his own Speeches?

Gord McFee Responds:

Hello, I am one of the volunteers who answers these questions. Others of my colleagues may contribute as well.

Based on what I can find, we are dealing with a two-part answer. Certainly, in the early part of his career, Hitler wrote his own speeches. Actually, he did not write them out. Rather, he prepared notes and underlined key phrases to ensure he emphasized those particular points. When he spoke, he used the notes as a guide and varied what he said depending on the mood and composition of the crowd he was addressing, the purpose of the speech and so on. He practiced the gestures he made during his speeches for hours in front of the mirror so he knew the effect they would have on his audience. And he doubtless had extraordinary oratorical skills and an ability to "read" his audience and improvise -- to hone in what he knew they wanted to hear, and to say it in a way that resonated with them.

After he became Chancellor, his audience became the world. Hence, his speeches did tend to be written out and edited ahead of time as most leaders' speeches tend to be. In this case, he was more liable to dictate the relevant portions to one of his secretaries (which also gave him the opportunity to practice them) and then have them typed up and edited. Even there, he improvised greatly and often barely followed the written text at all.

Hope this helps.

Question:

CAN YOU TELL ME IF ADOLF HITLER SPOKE ENGLISH?

Gord McFee Responds:

I am one of the volunteers who answers these questions.

Based on everything I have ever read about Hitler, including a book by his interpreter, I believe that he did not speak English.

Hope this helps.
