Question

I am helping to put together a production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and would like to incorperate actuall news reel footage from that era concerning the holocaust and the war. do you have any suggestions as to where to find and obtain this? If so, how much $ and so on. any help would be greatly appriciated as I am on a small budget and on a very short deadline.

Yale F. Edeiken answers:

One of the leading private archives of film from this era is maintained by Lou Reda of Easton, PA.

I hope this gives you two solid leads on where to find the material you are seeking.

Harry W. Mazal OBE answers:

One of my colleagues, Mr. Yale F. Edeiken, has already responded to your questions. What I have to offer will supplement his letter.

One source for news footage from WWII related to the Holocaust can be obtained at :

SOCIAL SCIENCES SCHOOL SERVICE
1-800-421-4246

Pages 344 to 347 of their most recent catalog (1999) includes such titles as:

We Must never Forget: The Story of the Holocaust

Children of the Holocaust

Nazis: A Warning from History

The Holocaust: Crimes Against Humanity

Escape frokm Sobibor

The Diary of Anne Frank

Anne Frank Remembered

The War Crimes Trials

An inexpensive source of Nazi footage and Holocaust videos is:

VIDEO YESTERYEAR
Box C-137
Sandy Hook, Conn. 06482

Another excellent source, albeit more expensive:

INTERNATIONAL HISTORIC FILMS
P. O. Box 29035
Chicago, IL 60629

I would suggest writing all three sources requesting a copy of their latest catalogs related to this period.

Finally, most major public libraries in the United States have large collections of these video tapes.

Yours sincerely,

Harry W. Mazal OBE
