It is often seen on people who try crash diets and if allowed to continue is fatal. This illness occurs when the body is deprived of carbohydrates but is given too much protein. A starvation type syndrome occurs because the protein requires more energy to process than it returns. The net effect is an accelerated depletion of the muscle and fat in the body. Nerve transmission is degraded as well once the body's stored fat reserves are depleted. This makes a good case for storage of some kind of edible fat as part of any long term plan. I've found that canned shortening lasts longer than anything else available off the shelf as most of the oxygen is removed in the canning process. This diet will allow you to lose weight quickly. It is also so dangerous as to be a fool's errand. Besides, weight gain afterwards is likely. Slow and steady with a balanced diet is better for weight loss. A pound a week or so is a good rate. I lost 25 lbs since January '01 by cutting out lunch except for 12 oz. of milk.
