Characteristics: Nasturtium has interesting round, watercress-flavored leaves and complex-shaped red, yellow, or orange flowers on bushy or vining plants. Flowers are as attractive as they are good to eat.

Growing Information: Plant nasturtiums in well-drained soil and full sun, or light shade in hot climates. Space seeds of bushy cultivars about 8 inches apart; space vining cultivars 18 inches apart. Fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer in spring to encourage more flower development.

Propagation: Sow seed outdoors after the last spring frost.

Cultivars: You can find an assortment of different flower colors and shapes, also cultivars with variegated foliage.

Possible Problems: Spray aphids with insecticidal soap.

Growing and Using: Harvest the peppery leaves and flowers for salads, vinegars, and cheese sandwiches. The flowers make a colorful herb vinegar. You can pickle the seeds and use them as you would capers.
