THE GREATEST STORY NEVER TOLD - A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE, 1945-1999

By Michael Smith

ADVANCE PRAISE
"The Greatest Story Never Told is a bold, provocative slash through the history of our country, a lively, uncompromising narrative which is a refreshing antidote to the self-congratulation so often found in Americans writing about the United States."

-----Howard Zinn, Author,  A People's History of the U.S.

"An excellent compilation of events which the media rarely reminds us of, and which young Americans have scarcely heard of."

            -----William Blum, Author,  Rogue State

"We are continually told of how benign and well-meaning America is.  This notion is not shared by the rest of the world, but it provides an effective shield against coming to grips with the realities of empire. Happily, there are  people like Michael Smith to disabuse us of the illusion of innocence. His fierce compendium of the misdeeds our leaders would have us forget is an indispensable guide to a history that is perpetually suppressed but must not be forgotten."

----- Joel Kovel, Professor of Social Studies, Bard College

SUMMARY
The Greatest Story Never Told is a mosaic of written snapshots unfolding in present tense narration, highlighting the themes of racism, sexism, militarism, imperialism and class domination.  The emphasis on "show, don't tell" allows readers to form their own judgments from the wealth of factual detail provided, while the present tense focus eliminates any tendency to see history as a parade of anachronisms.  Five "overview" essays interspersed with the narrated events give a general orientation to the author's point of view, but the preponderant reality is of a ring-side seat at some of the greatest events of the 20th Century:  The atomic bombings, the nuclear arms race, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the American Indian Movement, women's liberation, the Iranian hostage crisis, the U.S. war on Central America, the destruction of Iraq, the battle for Seattle, and many others.  Akin to the photographic negative of the New York Times, The Greatest Story Never Told contains "all the news unfit to print."  Find out why Sirhan Sirhan wrote "RFK must die," why the Pentagon called its nuclear policy MAD, NUTS, and DUMB, and how the U.S. came to be "the Great Satan" in the Muslim world.
