Elizabeth Ruth 'Betty' Grable was born on December 18, 1916 in St. Louis, Missouri. Lillian Rose, her mother, got her an acting part in a 1929 movie, and in 1943 she was the most popular movie star in the world. The photo of her looking over her shoulder in a bathing suit is still one of the most iconic photos of all time, and it accompanied many soldiers during World War II as their favorite 'pin up' poster.
