The Dorsey Brothers was a studio group that made recordings from 1928 until 1935 when the brothers, Jimmy and Tommy, split up to form their own big bands that toured the country. Their group included most of the famous musicians of the time. Glenn Miller composed two songs that they recorded while he was playing with them. Some of the other band members were: Adrian Rollini (bass saxophone), Arthur Schutt (piano), Bing Crosby (vocals), Glen Miller (Trombone), Frank Shoemacher (clarinet and tenor saxophone), Chauney Moreohouse (drums), Eddie Lang (guitar), Carl Kress (guitar), Frank Signorelli (piano), Jack Teagarden (trombone), Bunny Berigan (trumpet),Joe Venuti (violin), Fulton McGrath (piano), Mildred Bailey (vocals), and Johnny Mercer (vocals).
Before selling records the brothers played at the Lakewood Ballroom near their hometown of Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. As I write this, I live in Niles, Ohio, and one of my neighbors was born and brought up near Lakewood Park, on Route 54 between Mahanoy City and Barnesville Pennsylvania. Rell, my neighbor, lived as a young boy only a few minutes from the Lakewood Park, which was built and operated by the Guinan family from 1916 until it closed in 1984. Rell's father worked for a coal company nearby that operated what was at that time the largest strip mine in the world. On warm summer nights with all of the windows of his house open, young Rell would go to sleep listening to the sounds of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey as they played in the large ballroom at the nearby park.
