Thomas Wright 'Fats' Waller was born on May 21, 1904 in New York City, and died from pneumonia on December 15, 1943 at the age of 39 while on tour near Kansas City, Missouri. The son of a preacher, he started playing the piano at the age of 6, and when he was ten years old he became the church organist at his father's church. At the age of 14 he was playing professionally at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem, and composed his first original rag song. Before finding huge fame as a pianist and composer, he created songs and sold them for very little money to other performers who later took credit for their creation, never mentioning Mr. Waller.

One January evening in 1926 while leaving a performance in Chicago he was kidnapped by four husky men and shoved into a car that raced through the streets of Chicago to an unknown location. At gunpoint he was led into a building that was hosting a huge birthday party for gangster Al Capone, and he was ordered to play for the crowd. It is said that he was there for three days, and when the party finally ended, he was tired, tipsy, and had pockets full of cash from Al Capone and the grateful guests.

In addition to playing keyboards flawlessly, he sang and composed ragtime, swing and bee bop, he was masterful at emerging jazz music, and occasionally performed Bach organ pieces.
