1847. SCHOOLCRAFT, Henry R. Notes on the Iroquois: Or, Contributions to American History, Antiquities, and General Ethnology. Albany: Erastus H. Pease, 1847. Two full-color, hand painted plates, including a portrait of Pocahontas, and 36 woodcuts in text. Schoolcraft was an important explorer and ethnologist of the Mid-Western United States, publishing reports on the lead mines in Missouri (1819) and a narrative of the Cass Exploring Expedition (1821). Notes on the Iroquois originally appeared as New York State Senate document Number 24 in 1846, and contains chapters on the history of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes, their principles of government, folklore, archeology, and artistry. This edition was produced as a popular, readable account of that original government document. A very good copy bound in later cloth with leather spine label. 498 pages with 12 additional advertisement pages. There is foxing on the pages as can be seen on the title sheet pictured about.
