Fungal Skin Diseases

Neem extracts are some of the most powerful antifungal plant extracts found in Indian pharmacopeia against certain fungi. In particular, research has shown that the compounds gedunin and nimbidol found in the neem leaf control several fungi which attack humans, including those that cause athlete’s foot, ringworm, and Candida, an organism that causes yeast infections and thrush.

Ringworm

The fungus that causes ringworm is effectively controlled with neem extracts. In trials, patients that had failed to respond to treatment with salicylic acid and benzoic acid cleared up in two to three days after using neem extract on the areas. Affecting the smooth skin and scalp, these infections are often accompanied by profound itching. This fungus produces circular ring lesions up to six inches in diameter on the skin and can cause loss of hair in patches of the scalp. Washing with neem soap or shampoo and applying neem lotion onto the affected areas clears this infection in several days.

Athlete’s Foot

Neem extracts are effective against tinea pedia, the fungus that causes athlete’s foot. Fungal infections of this type affect nine out of ten people in the United States at some time or another. Untreated, this fungus can attack the toenails and even cause secondary infections throughout the body. A corn starch powder combined with powdered neem leaves makes an excellent preventative while a neem-based lotion can be used if an infection has already begun.

Jock Itch
Neem extracts inhibit growth of the fungus that causes jock itch. Neem seed oil and leaf extracts have been used for centuries to prevent fungal infections of the skin in the tropical regions where neem is found. Using a neem-based cream will dry the area, kill the fungus and reduce the itching. Using a neem-based cream will also help heal skin ravaged by the destructive fungus.

Yeast Infection
Neem oil and extracts control Candida and relieve the persistent itching caused by this fungus. For infections of the skin, apply a neem-based cream on the affected areas several times per day, especially after washing or getting the area wet. It will relieve the itching, heal the skin and get rid of the infection. For vaginal yeast infections, a neem-based cream can be applied with cotton swabs to relieve itching and to control the infection safely. Drinking three cups of neem tea for several days will help rid the body of both external and internal Candida infection.

Diaper Rash

Neem powders and creams protect babies from the effects of diaper rash. Both powdered leaf and neem-oil based creams have been used for centuries to protect children from diaper rash in India. Cleanse the baby's skin with neem soap and pat dry with a clean towel. Then apply a neem-based powder, cream or lotion to soothe the baby's skin, prevent diaper rash and to keep the baby's skin protected from moisture.
