Some Common Health Problems
and Grapefruit Seed Extract

Note: The information provided here is not a prescription for the treatment, diagnosis or prevention of ill health. Please see a licensed health-care provider. However, we do most strongly encourage your interest and research in the potential uses of GSE in health care, home, and industry.

Please note: the dosages recommended on this page are for NutriBiotic® All-Purpose Liquid Concentrate of Grapefruit extract.(Those using Citricidal® liquid should divide by three.)

ACNE

grapefruitAcne can be caused by bacterial infection, food allergies, improper hygiene, adolescent hormonal surges, and its incidence is greater in patients with fungal imbalance(Candida). Treatment: External: 5 drops of GSE added to your regular liquid cleanser makes a superior solution. GSE inhibits bacterial growth, and its astringent nature dries up glandular secretions, reducing the opportunity for bacteria to breed. If adding to larger quantities of cleanser, do not exceed 1% to 3%, as stronger concentrations may dry the skin. A chronic case of acne may require internal cleansing as well(10 – 15 drops, diluted, three times daily, with or without meals).

ATHLETE'S FOOT

grapefruitAthlete's Foot is usually caused by a fungus that can be treated effectively with a solution of GSE ranging from 0.1% to 2%. Nutribiotic's First Aid Spray is a good choice for this problem.
"I want to give you a heartfelt testimonial regarding GSE's effectiveness against my son's athlete's foot condition that he battled with only partial success for over one year. We have had greater results in 2 weeks of GSE than over a year of OTC creams, sprays, and powders used twice daily. Thanks again!"
-Susan S., Chicago, IL

CANDIDA ALBICANS

grapefruitWe have a lot of information about Candida at this link.

COLDS/FLU

grapefruitCaused by a number of different viral strains, colds and flu are notoriously resistant to pharmaceutical antibiotics. GSE gives excellent results, especially when combined with immune-supporting herbals like Echinacea, Goldenseal, and Astragalus. GSE can hasten recovery by directly attacking an intestinal virus in the digestive tract. Take 10 – 15 drops or one or two tablets three times daily, at the first signs of a cold or flu. As an alternative, mix fifty drops into a quart of fruit or vegetable juice and sip throughout the day. Often, using a GSE nasal spray, when the first symptoms of a runny nose appear, will stop the germs from turning into a sore throat and then a bronchial or pneumonial chest infection.

COLD SORES

grapefruitHerpes simplex 1 virus is believed to cause these nasty blisters that don’t always appear on lips only. Genital herpes is thought to be caused by a variant, Herpes simplex II, but some researchers now speculate that the same virus may be responsible for both conditions. This is a painful and embarrassing condition. But GSE, with its antiviral and astringent properties, can dry up the lesion and de-activate the virus, sometimes in a matter of hours. Use NutriBiotic FA Skin Ointment(now with Lysine), or make your own: Dilute GSE with vegetable glycerin(available at health food or drug stores). Try 5 drops GSE in 50 drops glycerin. If it irritates, cut back, if it doesn’t, try a little stronger for quicker relief. Listen to your lip!

CUTS/WOUNDS

grapefruitGSE is an ideal antiseptic alternative. Products that use alcohol or iodine can be effective germ killers, but their toxic nature may retard the growth of granulation tissue which is required to heal a wound. GSE appears to encourage the process of healing, perhaps because of its astringency and vegetable origins. Mix one-half ounce of GSE with eight ounces of distilled water and add to a clean spray bottle. Spray liberally over the affected area once every few minutes while performing other standard first aid procedures. A deep wound would require a more dilute mixture to avoid irritation. For severe wound or burn, see a licensed physician.

DANDRUFF

grapefruitDermatologists say that dandruff is most often caused by an inflammatory response to an overgrowth of scalp fungus which causes itching and scaling. When this is the case, good results may be obtained by adding a few drops of GSE to one’s regular shampoo, leave on for 3 – 5 minutes(don’t get in eyes, but if you do, rinse immediately), and rinse thoroughly. Too-frequent washing of hair removes natural oils that protect the scalp. In difficult cases, an internal cleanse will assist.

DIAPER RASH

grapefruitOften caused by an allergic reaction to the diaper material or to food residues in the urine and/or feces. Allowing a child to stay wet for a prolonged period is almost a guarantee that a fungal overgrowth will produce a diaper rash. When a microorganism is causing the rash, GSE powder can prove effective. Mix one-part GSE powder(or grind up a tablet), one part slippery elm powder(a health food store item), and fifteen parts finely milled rice, corn, or cassava root flour(tapioca). Apply twice daily. As an alternate, try a GSE footpowder. (Note: do not use products containing talc: they may cause irritation, and, if inhaled, may be fatal to infants.) In persistent cases, your health-care provider may recommend GSE powder internally, along with probiotics(acidophilus, bifidus, etc.) to balance the intestinal flora

DIARRHEA

grapefruitThis condition has a variety of causes. When caused by a bacteria, fungus, or virus, a few doses of GSE may be all that is needed. Parasitic dysentery may require weeks of treatment in combination with other treatments, herbal or pharmaceutical. Use fifteen to twenty drops (or two tablets) diluted in juice every four hours up to sixty drops (or 6 tablets) per day. Always supplement with probiotics to replace beneficial bacteria lost in the watery stool.

EARACHE

grapefruitUse a commercially-prepared eardrops formula. Do not use GSE liquid concentrate directly in the ear. In the event of such contact, rinse thoroughly with water. Also effective in many cases is 3% hydrogen peroxide.

GUMS(gingivitis)

grapefruitOften caused by bacteria, although fungi and viruses may also be involved. A build-up of plaque indicates the presence of certain bacteria that bind minerals and deposit them on the gums. Excessive plaque causes gums to recede and leads to a loss of teeth. Gingivitis can also be traced to nutritional deficiencies(typically vitamins A and C).

For general gum care, dilute five to ten drops GSE in six to eight ounces of water; swish and rinse. Do not apply concentrate to teeth or gums directly: its acidic properties could result in erosion with prolonged use. Also, consider using a dental gel made with GSE.

IMPETIGO

grapefruitA skin infection most often affecting children. An itchy rash-like outbreak distinguished by a clear to yellow discharge of pus which keeps the affected area wet. Usually caused by bacteria, either streptococcus or staphylococcus usually implicated. Mix one-half ounce of GSE in five ounces of water; apply to infected area several times daily. Recurrent cases can be avoided by careful attention to hygiene. Wash hands and face with cleansers that contain GSE. A one to three-percent solution can be used after shaving, on mosquito bites and after handling contaminated objects, etc. One teaspoon(maximum) of GSE added to the laundry wash cycle will help decontaminate shared towels, linens, etc. Some add GSE to the final rinse as an alternative.

PARASITES

grapefruitWe have a lot of information about parasites at this link.

POISON IVY/POISON OAK

grapefruitGSE’s effectiveness in treating this type of contact dermatitis is in large measure due to its astringency, which helps dry the fluid filled lesions rapidly. GSE is also effective in preventing the spread of secondary bacterial infections which can result from scratching. Mix one ounce GSE with ten ounces of water in a spray bottle and apply to a small area of the skin. If a burning sensation results, add ten or more ounces of water. Spray liberally over affected areas; repeat every two hours as needed.

SINUSITUS

grapefruitColds, food or inhalant allergies, pressure changes, even a displacement of skull bones(blocking drainage), may bring on a bout of sinusitis. The Mayo Clinic says fungus may be the cause of ALL chronic sinus infections. If an infection is the cause, a frothy white, yellow, or green discharge may occur. The mucous membranes will be inflamed and extremely tender, so care must be taken when using GSE as a nasal douche. Use a commercially-prepared nasal spray, or put one ounce of distilled water into a spray atomizer, add a pinch of salt(solution should have the saltiness of tears), and no more than two drops of GSE. Shake thoroughly and spray gently into the nose, gradually inhaling into the deeper sinuses. If a burning sensation occurs, dilute with equal amounts of distilled water. On the other hand, if too mild, add one or two drops additional GSE, and shake thoroughly. You want it to sting a little(so you know it's working) but not to burn.

SORE THROAT

grapefruitBacteria, virus, and even fungus can cause throat inflammation. Doctors are most concerned when the cause is B hemolytic strep. While the bacteria itself poses only a minor threat to the host, it is the allergic reaction to immune complexes created by the body to fight the germ that can cause scarlet fever, rheumatic heart disease, and glomerular nephritis. Because the throat affords easy access, symptomatic relief is often quite rapid with the administration of GSE. Thoroughly mix 15 to 20 drops of NutriBiotic GSE liquid, or two tablets, pulverized, into 6 to 8 ounces water or diluted juice. Gargle deep in the throat before swallowing. Swallowing the solution insures that areas of the throat inaccessible to gargling are reached and also helps treat the infection systemically. For small children, mix one or two drops into any heavy syrup, and spoon it in. The syrup will slow things down and give the GSE longer to work.

ULCERS

grapefruitThe medical community is re-evaluating this common problem. No longer seen as just the product of stress, the bacteria Helicobacter pylori is now being implicated in at least 50 percent of peptic and duodenal ulcers. Medical treatment for ulcers depends largely on two powerful pharmaceutical antibiotics: Ketoconozole and Amoxycillin in combination with the mineral bismuth(a component of Pepto-Bismol™) Holistic practitioners have had success with GSE and in combination with some herbal preparations. Begin with one tablet dissolved in 12 ounces of juice or water and take with one meal per day. If no irritation occurs, increase to two, then three meals per day, until a maximum of 6 tablets(dissolved in liquid) is reached. A preparation containing bismuth(like PeptoBismal) may hasten recovery, as will attention to diet and nutrition. (Valley Microbiology Services of Palo Alto, CA, tested Citricidal® GSE and found it effective against H. pylori at 0.1% dilution.)
A caution: ulcers present a potentially lethal condition. Treatment with or without GSE should be supervised by a physician.

Ulcers/Cancer/Common Stomach Bacteria

British doctors treat stomach bug in bid to beat cancer

LONDON (Reuters) - Researchers launched a national trial in Britain Tuesday to see whether treating a common stomach infection could help to prevent cancer.

Helicobacter pylori, a stomach bacterium, is associated with up to 55 percent of stomach cancers. Studies have shown that people with the bug are about four or five times more likely to develop stomach cancer.

Researchers hope that by treating the bacterium they can cut the risk of stomach cancer.

``This is an exciting study because we do not know whether screening for, and eradicating, H pylori in healthy adults will reduce people's risk of stomach cancer and possibly other diseases,'' Prof. Nicholas Wald of the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine at St. Bartholomew's and The Royal London School of Medicine said in a statement.

``If it does, we could potentially prevent up to 55 percent of all stomach cancer cases in Britain by just a week's course of antibiotics,'' he added. The scientists will recruit about 56,000 people into the five-year trial that will be conducted throughout Britain. Blood samples from half the group will be screened and if they test positive for the bacteria they will be given antibiotics.

Blood from the other half will not be screened and will act as a control group. After 15 years both groups will be followed up to see if they develop cancer.

``If the trial is successful, it may have far-reaching implications for the discovery and treatment of other infections associated with cancer,'' said Prof. Gordon McVie, director-general of the Cancer Research Campaign.

Stomach cancer is the second most common cancer in the world. Five-year survival rates are low because of late diagnosis.

Experts believe H pylori, which is also linked to ulcers and gastric lymphoma, a blood cancer that develops in the stomach, infects most people during childhood."
