Metabolic Therapies for Cancer
The metabolic therapies are based on the belief that cancer is a complex breakdown in normal body chemistry which requires intervention at many levels to interrupt the cancer growth. Detoxification procedures such as colonic irrigation, and liver and gallbladder flushes are used. Dietary changes, similar to the ones listed under "Dietary Therapies" above, are used.
Metabolic agents such as vitamins, minerals, glandulars, enzymes, EDTA, DMSO, ozone, hydrazine sulfate, bovine and shark cartilage and the often maligned (by the cancer establishment) laetrile (vitamin B17) are used to attack the tumor at the biochemical level. The vaccine approach is used, as is live cell therapy and psychological counseling.
When reading about metabolic therapy for cancer, one gets the image of pointing fifty shotguns at a rabbit, so that even though many pellets go astray, some also will hit the target.
Hans Nieper, M.D.
Dr. med. (as they call it in Germany) Hans Nieper is an oncologist now practicing in Hannover, Germany. He applies various metabolic therapies in his own unique way, using many of the approaches already mentioned. He terms his approach "eumetabolic therapy." He employs the usual vegetarian/fruitarian approach along with, among other things, vitamins, minerals, BCG, laetrile, squalene for chromosome repair and bromelain (600 to 1200 mg. per day) to dissolve the membrane around cancer cells allowing T-lymphocytes (which he builds up with thymus extract and zinc orotate) to attack them. While Dr. Nieper is an admirable example of a doctor who uses the metabolic approach, there is no need to rush off to Germany for therapy. Many good doctors in the North America use the metabolic approach with equal effect.
Gerson Therapy
Max Gerson, M.D., was a refugee from Nazi Germany who immigrated to the U.S. in 1936 where he practiced the dietary and detoxification therapies he had developed during his distinguished medical career in Germany. He came under severe persecution for his methods by the New York State Medical Society. His methods still are listed under the "Unproven Therapies" blacklist of the ACS, even though his diet for cancer has an uncanny resemblance to the ACS diet, adopted in 1984, which is recommended to prevent cancer 48 years after Gerson first applied these principles to the treatment of cancer in the U.S.
Gerson Therapy emphasizes fresh, organically grown, raw vegetables and fresh juices made from same. The primary detoxification method is the coffee enema, which allows the liver to relax its drainage system and discharge accumulated toxins. All types of cancers are said to respond and, during his lifetime, Gerson reported a thirty-percent, five-year survival rate for the "incurable" cancers in advanced stages. Gerson Therapy is most effective in lymphoma and melanoma and least effective with leukemia.
