In recent years there has been a sharp increase in the incidence of chronic degenerative disease. Many of the disorders are lifestyle induced and reflect deficiencies in dietary regimens and probably many other factors such as insufficient exercise and abnormally sustained stress levels. Many chronic diseases are indicative of a breakdown in the efficient immune functioning of the body. Let's take a look at only a few of these degenerative diseases:

Cancer

* About 2,221,800 new cases are expected to
be diagnosed in 1999

* About 563,100 Americans are expected to
die from cancer - that's more than 1,500 a day

* In the U.S., 1 of 4 deaths is a result of cancer

Arthritis

* Arthritis affects more than 40 million
Americans, or almost 1 out of 7 people,
making it one of the most prevalent diseases in
the U.S.

* Arthritis is America's number one crippling disease

* 1 of 2 Americans over 65 yrs. old suffers from arthritis

Allergies/Hay Fever

* Allergies account for more than 11 million
office visits per year

* 25% of the population are afflicted with allergies

* Allergies are imposing a great economic
burden with cost of treatment estimated at
$10 billion a year

Prophylactic advice would be to pay careful attention to nutritional balance and to attempt a more stress-free life with regular exercise. The quest for some form of really helpful treatment has taken researchers full circle. After having moved away from botanical sources in the development of complex chemical drugs, there is now a resurgence of interest and research into herbs and plants as the source of dramatic health giving phytochemicals.

This new interest has centered in the activity of plant sterols and sterolins. These active phytochemicals in fruits, vegetables and other botanical sources, have a variety of different functions in the human body. In particular, they provide strong protection against diseases caused by compromised immunity. These diseases include Cancer, Rheumatoid Arthritis, HIV, TB, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and other chronic viral and bacterial conditions. Other diseases which respond positively to phytochemicals are diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain inflammatory conditions.

In June 1997, Professor Karl H. Pegel, of the University of Natal / South Africa, published a review in the South African Journal of Science. His comments included, "Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that diets rich in sterols and sterolins reduce the risk of developing various types of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other common ailments of civilization" and "It has also been shown that when sterols and sterolins were given to human volunteers with a normal diet, an enhanced T-Cell proliferative response was observed after four weeks of daily oral supplementation. This strongly suggests that plant sterols and sterolins, at surprisingly low concentrations, have a beneficial effect on the immune system" and finally, "Reports exist about the anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, anti-diabetic, and anti-cancer activity of both sterols and sterolins."
