70+ Year Old Village Women Beat the Glamor

The sight of six grandmothers in traditional wear doesn’t exactly scream, “YouTube hit,” but the “Buranovskiye Babushki” (the Grannies from Buranovo) have more charisma than some of the most glamorous rock stars.

On March 7, 2012, six women—aged between 43 and 74 - defeated 24 other acts to win the right to represent Russia at Eurovision - the pan-European singing contest that is also the world’s most-watched non-sporting event. (Think of it as American Idol meets the Olympic Games.) Since then, the video of them performing their song “Party for Everybody” has been watched more than three million times on YouTube.

The band consists of eight grandmothers. They are originally from the Udmurt Republic, from the village of Buranovo, where they lead simple lives. They walk everywhere, grow their own food, do their laundry by hand, and sing in their spare time.

The band performs most of their songs in their Udmurt language, and at the final they sang Party For Everybody. The lyrics of this song were written by the grannies themselves.

They scored the highest number of points and won the Russian national final. Russia will take part in the First Semi-Final of the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday 22nd May in Baku.
