DIAMONDS COME TO AMERICA
the stone. But you cannot buy any other luxury and get a 100-per-cent return on it if you want to exchange it for cash.
More
important is this fact: The diamond is the only luxury that has a basic
value, seldom changing (with the possible exception of works of art).
It never is a secondhand object You buy a new car; you drive that car
around the block—just once. The moment you sit in it and start driving
it around the block it becomes a second-hand car. The moment you
purchase a fur coat and walk out of the store with it on your back it
becomes a second-hand fur coat.
The
diamond is never "second-hand." It is an eternal thing. It may be recut
to fit new modes, but it still is the same sparkling diamond, its fire
undimmed.
