of
the new engagement rings jeweled with blue sapphires in combination
with the diamond—blue being the "color of eternity." Later a popular
gift to the bride by a service man who could afford it became known as
the diamond regimental badge. It actually was a brooch. It had all the
young-love connotation of the American fraternity pin. The regimental
insignia was styled in gold, rich enamels, and precious stones. For
instance, the stag's head of the Gordon Highlanders or the lion of the
Carabineers was modeled in relief and set solid with diamonds.
Diamonds, it is reasonable to expect, will exist long after the second
World War is but a bitter memory.
