copper sheet in rock-1
Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan
In this specimen, a thin sheet of copper
projects out of a rock. How did it
form? The rock came first; it was
then cracked by tectonic forces. Copper
was injected into the thin, small
opening formed by the crack. Later the rock
was exposed during the mining
process and the two pieces of rock broke
away, leaving the sheet of copper that
had filled the crack.
