Mineral information on garnet
Garnet is derived from
pomegranate in reference to its similarity
to the small red seeds in the fruit.
Garnet's hardness and sharp fractures make it a
good abrasive. The largest garnet
mine in the United States is a Gore Mountain near North Creek in New York where
an almandite variety of garnet is mined.
