Of the
30 or so desktop viewers to appear, most are closed source and either
shareware or try-then-buy packages. For our pedagogic purposes,
therefore, they are not much good. (As products in their own right,
of course, things may be a different. I am not making any comment as
to the value of commercial packages, apart from the fact that I
can't show you their code and explain how it works.
For commercial success, this is irrelevant, but for this book it is
quite key.)
For our purposes, therefore, one relative newcomer gives us plenty of
scope. So, for the rest of this chapter, we will look at the
brainchild of Morbus Iff (or Kevin Hemenway to the uncool):
