IEEE 802.3 10Base2 LAN COMPONENTS

    10Base2 Backbone:

  1. A 10Base2 LAN requires at least:

    1. RG-58 Thin COAX cable.

    2. 50 Ohm Terminators.

    3. "T-connectors"
    4. Network Interface Cards with BNC connections.(NIC)
    5. Multiport Repeaters.

  2. The "T-Connector" and NIC is required at each device.

  3. The RG-58 COAX cable runs from device to device, and connects to the device or repeater with a "T-Connector"

  4. A Segment of 10Base2 Coax consists of multiple pieces of 10Base2 with a BNC connector connected to the "T-Connector" at each device.

  5. You must have a "terminator" at both ends of a segment as shown below.

      Notice this about this picture:

    1. It has ONE segment of 10Base2.
    2. The segment is actually 3 separate pieces of cable.
    3. The segment has a terminator at each end.
    4. Each PCs has a NIC in it.
    5. There are "T-Connectors" connecting the cable to the NIC.

NOTE: A segment is the length of cable between Terminators. You may have up to 30 connections (T-Connectors) per segment. The example above has only 1 segment which contains 3 smaller pieces of cable connected together with "T-Connectors" at each workstation. The "T-connector" is connected directly to the NIC in each PC.

With 10Base2, you can have multiple segments, but they must be connected together by using a repeater.

A "multi-port" repeater is usually needed with a 10Base2 backbone.

    Question: WHY?

Answer: So you can have more than 30 connections on a 10Base2 LAN.
