TROUBLE-SHOOTING/REPAIRING TOOLS

"Trouble-Shooting" tools and "Repairing" tools are actually different tools.

These tools are available from numerous vendors, among the vendors are Fluke, Jensen, Techni_Tool, etc.

Tool kits for "repairing" PCs are available from $15.00 to $500.00 or more. I would recommend a kit that costs around $150 - 300.00. These kits will include at least the following:

  1. Nut drivers - 3/16 and 1/4 inch.
  2. Screw drivers - small and medium sizes, phillips and flat-blade types.
  3. Chip extractors and inserters.
  4. Tweezers and screw grabbers.
  5. Needle-nose pliers (small and medium sizes)
  6. Hemostats
  7. Wire Cutters (small) and Wire Stripper.
  8. Torx drivers - I haven't seen any need for them yet.
  9. Small vise or clamp
  10. Small file
  11. Adjustable desk mountable light and small flashlight.
  12. Soldering Iron - high quality adjustable.
  13. Static grounding wrist straps.
  14. Cable Tool for network wiring - COAX and twisted pair to RJ45 cable connectors.

Devices for "trouble-shooting" computer electronic circuits and networks should also be available. I agree that in most cases you will send a computer off for repairs; however, some tools such as the following may be useful:

  1. Loop Back Connectors. (9 pin and 25 pin)
  2. Cable Scanners (For Network Wiring include 10Base2 and 10BaseT connectors or more).
  3. Ohmmeter/Voltmeter/Multi-Meter
  4. Break-Out-Box (BOB)
  5. Logic Probes and Logic Pulsers
  6. Outlet Testers
  7. Memory Testers (SIMM and DIMM if available)
