TROUBLE-SHOOTING/REPAIRING TOOLS
"Trouble-Shooting" tools and "Repairing" tools are actually different tools.
These tools are available from numerous vendors, among the vendors are Fluke, Jensen, Techni_Tool,
etc.
Tool kits for "repairing" PCs are available from $15.00 to $500.00 or more. I would recommend
a kit that costs around $150 - 300.00. These kits will include at least the following:
- Nut drivers - 3/16 and 1/4 inch.
- Screw drivers - small and medium sizes, phillips and flat-blade types.
- Chip extractors and inserters.
- Tweezers and screw grabbers.
- Needle-nose pliers (small and medium sizes)
- Hemostats
- Wire Cutters (small) and Wire Stripper.
- Torx drivers - I haven't seen any need for them yet.
- Small vise or clamp
- Small file
- Adjustable desk mountable light and small flashlight.
- Soldering Iron - high quality adjustable.
- Static grounding wrist straps.
- Cable Tool for network wiring - COAX and twisted pair
to RJ45 cable connectors.
Devices for "trouble-shooting" computer electronic circuits and networks should also be available. I agree
that in most cases you will send a computer off for repairs; however, some tools such as the following
may be useful:
- Loop Back Connectors. (9 pin and 25 pin)
- Cable Scanners (For Network Wiring include 10Base2 and 10BaseT connectors or more).
- Ohmmeter/Voltmeter/Multi-Meter
- Break-Out-Box (BOB)
- Logic Probes and Logic Pulsers
- Outlet Testers
- Memory Testers (SIMM and DIMM if available)
